Sri Lanka have had a solid form in the recent home ODIs. They defeated Australia 2-0 in the ODI series at home ground. They have three wins in the last five ODI matches. This will be a tough series for Bangladesh to conquer Sri Lankan challenge at Sri Lankan soil.
In the last match against Australia, Sri Lanka scored 281 runs with the loss of 4 wickets. Nishan Madushka and Kushal Mendis gave a good start to Sri Lanka as they lost their first wicket in the fifth over. Nishan Madushka scored 51 runs while Kusal Mendis scored 101 runs. Captain Charith Asalanka scored 78 and Janith Liyanage scored 32 off 21 balls to finish off the inning in style. During the Aussie’s chase, Sri Lanka dismantled their batting lineup with a strong bowling performance. Australia were bowled out at just 107 runs. Captain Steven Smith and Josh Inglis are the only batters who could cross 20 runs mark from Australia’s batting lineup. Asitha Fernando took four while Dunith Wellalage and Wanindu Hasaranga took three wickets to win the match for Sri Lanka by a massive 174 runs.
Bangladesh are having a horrible recent form in the ODIs losing all the last five matches they played. Bangladesh were qualified for the Champions Trophy and delivered a below par performance. There has been a lot of talk for the participation of Bangladesh, not Sri Lanka in the Champions Trophy but that can’t be undone. Sri Lanka would have played better than Bangladesh in CT2025. Bangladesh lost one match to India and one to New Zealand while one of their matches was abandoned due to rain.
The last match against New Zealand was a good match for Bangladesh with a few positives to move forward with. They lost the match by 5 wickets but took it very close till the 47th over. They scored a well made 236 with efforts from captain Najmul Hossain Shanto scoring 77 and Jaker Ali scoring 45 runs. Their bowling did fine as four bowlers got one wicket each in that match.
The pitch at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo usually supports spin bowling. Over the years, it has helped spinners more than pacers, especially during the middle overs. Fast bowlers might get some movement early in the innings, but as the match progresses, spinners become more effective and start controlling the game.
The surface is not very high-scoring. The average first innings score at this ground is around 233 runs. So, any team batting first would target around 250 to 260, which could be a match-winning total here.
Historically, this venue has hosted 176 ODI matches. Out of those, 96 matches were won by teams batting first, while 68 were won by teams chasing. This clearly shows that batting first gives an advantage, and most captains prefer to do that after winning the toss.
Although the stadium has seen some big scores in the past, chasing here isn’t always easy due to how the pitch behaves in the second half. Sri Lankan grounds, including this one, have shown similar spin-friendly conditions, especially in the last year during series against teams like India and West Indies.
In the total of 57 head-to-head battles, most were won by Sri Lanka, 43 in total, while Bangladesh have found themselves lucky to win 12 matches against Sri Lanka. Two matches were washed out in the rain without any result. Sri Lanka, no doubt, are the dominant force and Bangladesh have to be careful in this match.
The story of the last head-to-head match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will take us to the year 2024 when Sri Lanka toured Bangladesh and were playing the third ODI of the series. This match was the series decider as first two ODIs went in both teams favour one by one. Bangladesh, however, stood high in that match defeateing Sri Lanka by 4 wickets. Janith Liyanage’ hundred provided Sri Lanka a fighatable total of 235 runs which was looking like Mount Everest for Bangladesh to chase but youngsters Tanzid Hasan and Rishad Hossain had other plans on that day. They helped Bangladesh to win the match by 4 wickets.
