Sri Lanka won the first ODI against Bangladesh by 77 runs and took a good lead of 1-0 in the series. But this victory was not as easy as it looks. The start of the match was a nightmare for Sri Lanka. The top 3 wickets fell for just 29 runs - Pathum Nissanka out on zero, Nishan Madushka and Kamindu Mendis also failed to impress. But at that time the team’s captain Charith Asalanka played a brilliant innings. He scored 106 runs in 123 balls and took the team out of the collapse. Kusal Mendis also supported him with 45 runs. Some contributions also came from the lower order as Janith Liyanage made 29 and debutant Milan Rathnayake scored 22. Sri Lanka made a decent total of 244 runs.
They dominated the bowling. Wanindu Hasaranga took 4 wickets giving away just 10 runs and Kamindu Mendis also took 3 wickets. They bowled out Bangladesh for just 167 in 35.5 overs. This match was not just a victory for Sri Lanka, it was a confidence booster. This win boosted the confidence of captain Charith Asalanka and Hasaranga who both became the real heroes of the match.
Bangladesh started the match well. When they were at 100 for the loss of one wicket, It seemed to be a comfortable chase. Tanzid Hasan scored 62 runs in 61 balls and Parvez Emon also gave a little start. But as soon as Emon got out, the whole batting order was shaken. Suddenly 6 wickets fell in just 5 runs. From 100/1 the team ended up being 105/8. This collapse was the turning point of the match. The middle order and the lower order did not show any resistance. Everyone seemed helpless in front of the spin of Wanindu Hasaranga and Kamindu Mendis.
In bowling, Taskin Ahmed took 4 wickets and Tanzim Hasan Sakib took 3 wickets. They did not let anyone else dominate much except Asalanka, but the batting spoiled the entire match. This was Bangladesh's 7th consecutive defeat in the ODI format, and now they will have to change their entire mindset to come back in the series.
R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo is a spin-friendly wicket which was seen in the previous match as well. Throughout the years, it has been helpful for spinners more than pacers, particularly in the second innings. The middle overs are the toughest to survive on this pitch in the second innings. However the only thing that can help in the second innings is dew. There was less dew in the last match which helped Sri Lanka to turn the game in the most dramatic style. The typical score for the first innings at this venue is approximately 233 runs. Batting first is a better option in this pitch with the hot and humid weather of Colombo testing your limits in the field in the first innings. This makes toss an important factor in this match.
A strong rivalry awaits you in this match. These neighbouring countries have played a total of 58 matches in ODI cricket where Sri Lanka have powerfully dominated Bangladesh with 44 wins. Bangladesh could only win 12 matches. Two matches have had no result. This record clearly shows that Sri Lanka has always had the upper hand.
The last match was also a perfect example of this. Asalanka's solid century and Hasaranga's deadly spell did not give Bangladesh a chance. Bangladesh was able to create some momentum in the first ODI, but could not convert it in the match. If they have to make a comeback in the series, then they should play the next match as a final. On the other hand, Sri Lanka would like to make its name in the series with one more win.
