West Indies’ recent form has been a bit inconsistent in the ODI format. They played their last series against England, losing all three matches. In the last match, they made a respectable score of 251 runs, but England chased it down in just 29.4 overs. Sherfane Rutherford (70) and Gudakesh Motie (63) played impressive knocks, but their top order came under pressure by giving away early wickets. West Indies did not look impactful in bowling either, especially the pace attack conceded too many runs and did not make breakthroughs.
Their batting depth has certainly been visible in the last few matches, but they need to bring discipline in their top order and bowling. Players like Rutherford and Motie have shown a fightback but they need more consistent performances if they want to build momentum in the upcoming matches. If West Indies improve their start and the bowlers start taking wickets, they can challenge any team.
Pakistan’s current ODI form is quite disappointing. The team has not won any of its last five matches, which includes a 3-0 series clean sweep against New Zealand. In the last ODI, Pakistan made just 221 runs while chasing a target of 265 and lost by 43 runs. Babar Azam played a fighting innings of 50 runs but the middle and lower order collapsed quickly. Akif Javed performed well with the ball (4 wickets) but their bowling unit did not get consistent support.
The biggest concern for the team is their unstable middle order which seems to be crumbling under pressure. Rizwan and Tayyab Tahir showed some positive signs but their rotation of strike and lack of partnerships is weakening their chase efforts. They are getting breakthroughs in bowling too but run control and fielding are still issues. Pakistan will have to show improvement in every area from top order to death bowling to get back on the winning path.
The pitch for ODI matches at the Brian Lara Stadium is a bit tricky. The wicket here moves slow, meaning batting is not easy. As the overs of the match progress, the pitch becomes slower. In the beginning, the fast bowlers get a bit of swing from the new ball. In the first and so far only ODI between India and West Indies, India batted first and made 351 runs. West Indies were all out for just 151. Indian fast bowlers took 8 wickets in that match.
Spinners are quite effective in the middle overs as the pitch provides a turn for them. Batsmen also have to face extra bounce or sometimes low bounce, which becomes tough for them. Shardul Thakur took 4 wickets in that match and Mukesh Kumar also took 3 wickets. Scoring runs is possible on the pitch but saving wickets in the beginning and middle overs is important. Overall, this stadium seems bowlers-friendly, especially when the team bowls first and the pitch is fresh.
The ODI rivalry between West Indies and Pakistan is quite old and strong. Both the teams have faced each other 137 times so far, in which West Indies has won 71 matches while Pakistan has won 63 matches. 3 matches have been tied and 3 have been no results. The competition between the two is quite close but West Indies has a slight edge.
The last ODI match of the two was held on 12 June 2022 at Multan Stadium where Pakistan won by 53 runs in the 48 overs DLS match. Shadab Khan scored 86 runs and also took 4 wickets which became the turning point of the entire match. Pakistan scored 269 runs in response to which the West Indies team was all out for just 216 runs. Akeal Hosein batted fast for 60 runs but did not get any support from anyone. The hero of this victory of Pakistan was Shadab who did wonders with both ball and bat.
