The recent form of West Indies has been quite disappointing, especially their 5-0 clean sweep in the 5-match T20I series against Australia. In every match, their batting or bowling seemed to fail somewhere or the other. In the last match also they made a decent total of 170 - Hetmyer played an attacking innings of 52 runs and Rutherford, Holder also gave some support. But the whole team was all out in 19.4 overs. In bowling, Akeal Hosein took 3 wickets and kept the economy tight, but rest of the bowlers failed to give runs. During this series West Indies have shown consistent batting collapses and weak death bowling.
The team's confidence level seems quite low at the moment, and their momentum is in the negative direction. They have faced defeat repeatedly in the last 5 matches. Neither is the top-order performing consistently, nor has the middle-order produced any game-changing innings. Discipline is also missing in bowling, and fielding errors have added to their problems. Now if West Indies have to do something against an opponent like Pakistan, they will have to be aggressive as well as disciplined in their approach, otherwise their losing streak could be longer.
Pakistan's form has been better than West Indies, but their performance has also been a bit up-and-down. They lost the 3-match T20I series against Bangladesh 2-1, but their performance in the last match was quite dominating. In batting, Sahibzada Farhan played a brilliant innings of 63 runs which was well supported by Hasan Nawaz and Nawaz. Pakistan made a strong total of 178 and in bowling, Bangladesh was all out for just 104. Salman Mirza took 3 wickets, Mohammad Nawaz gave quick breakthroughs and the entire bowling unit together dismantled the opposition. This kind of team effort is Pakistan's strength when all the players play their roles well.
Overall, Pakistan's team looks structured - they have powerful hitters as well as sharp bowlers. But consistency is still an issue. The middle-order looks a bit fragile and sometimes sloppy efforts are seen in fielding. But they have match-winners who can turn the game around any day. If Pakistan gives a balanced performance like this, then they will have the upper hand against the West Indies, especially when the opponent has lost 5 back-to-back matches.
The Central Broward Stadium in Lauderhill is considered quite good for batting, especially at the beginning of the match. The pitch is flat during the powerplay overs and the ball comes on easily, allowing the opening batsmen to get a full opportunity to attack. But as the match progresses, the pitch gradually slows down. This allows spinners and pacers who bowl slow variations to come back into the game. The average first innings score here hovers around 165-170 and the total run rate is also around 7.86. The toss also plays a very crucial role because 11 times out of 17 T20Is the team winning the toss has won the match when they batted first. This means that the team batting first gets an advantage here.
This ground is a bit big, the straight boundaries are 73-78 meters and the square boundaries are also between 68-71 meters which creates a bit of challenge for the big hitters. If the weather is overcast or rainy, then the pitch becomes even slower where spinners become quite dangerous. By the way, in dry conditions the pacers also make a good impact, especially if they have variations like slower ones or cutters. KL Rahul played the iconic innings of 110* runs here against West Indies, and West Indies' score of 245/6 is the highest team total. In contrast, New Zealand has also been all out for just 81 runs against Sri Lanka. So if we look at the totals together, this pitch is batting friendly at the start of the match but as the game progresses, it becomes helpful for the bowlers – especially the spinners.
The T20I history between West Indies and Pakistan has been mostly in Pakistan's favour. A total of 21 matches have been played in which West Indies has won only 3 times while Pakistan has won 15 matches. 3 matches have had no result. Both teams have lost many times but Pakistan's domination is clearly visible. West Indies' batting has been threatening at times but their bowling has not been able to consistently put pressure on Pakistan.
The last time both the teams clashed was in the 2021-22 series at the National Stadium in Karachi. In that 3rd T20I, West Indies batted first and made a strong total of 207/3. Pooran scored 64 runs, Brooks scored 49 and King scored 43. But Pakistan chased and won the match easily. Rizwan scored 87 and Babar scored 79. Pakistan won the match by 7 wickets in just 18.5 overs. Asif Ali hit the winning shot in the 19th over.
