The Zimbabwe team has been struggling in the T20I format. They have won only 2 and lost 3 of their last 5 T20I matches. The first match of the tri-series against South Africa was also disappointing for them, where their batting put up a decent score but the bowling attack could not defend the score.
Sikandar Raza has become the leading run scorer besides being the captain, but he needs more support from the middle order and bowlers. There was expectation from players like Sean Williams and Madande, but there is a lack of consistency. Zimbabwe's pacers are failing to build pressure and the spin is also not making an impact. If the team has to win the next match, they need to bring partnerships in batting and discipline in bowling.
The New Zealand team is in strong form and they have won 4 of their last 5 T20I matches. In the opening match of the tri-series, they made a solid start by defeating a strong team like South Africa by 21 runs. Youngsters like Tim Robinson and Bevon Jacobs batted well and took the team to a big score. In bowling, their pace attack came with tight line length and the spinners also made crucial breakthroughs.
Their fielding unit also looks sharp. The overall confidence of the team is high and the balance of the squad is also quite good. Their recent winning form against Raza-led Zimbabwe makes them clear favourites, but they must guard against overconfidence as Zimbabwe has the capacity to upset.
The Harare pitch feels slightly crisp and firm at the beginning of the game. Fast bowlers might experience some moisture from the new ball, allowing for swing or seam movement during the initial overs. As the day goes on and the sun sets, the surface levels out and batting becomes simpler.
This pitch is hosting the initial game, thus the surface will stay untouched. The ball will behave nicely in the first innings, allowing batsmen to relish their shots. Scoring runs during the powerplay will be quite straightforward. Spinners might receive a bit of spin during the middle overs, but not a lot.
Chasing gets somewhat difficult here as seen in the last match between South Africa and New Zealand where the proteas couldn’t chase the target down in the second innings. For this reason, the team that wins the toss usually chooses to bat first. A score close to 170 is seen as competitive, but if the top order maintains its performance, it could exceed 200 too.
T20I head-to-head record between Zimbabwe and New Zealand, then New Zealand has completely dominated. Till now 6 T20 matches have been played between both the teams and New Zealand has won all the 6 matches. Zimbabwe has not defeated them even once in T20. No match was tied or there was any result. This clearly shows that New Zealand has a complete upper hand over Zimbabwe in the T20 format.
The last T20 match between these two was played in 2015. Since then till date they have not clashed in T20. The 2015 match was held in Harare where New Zealand defeated Zimbabwe by 80 runs. In that match George Worker played a tremendous innings of 62 runs and Martin Guptill also made quick 33 runs. New Zealand made a total score of 198/5 which was a very big target for Zimbabwe.
From Zimbabwe's side Craig Ervine did make 42 runs but he did not get proper support from anyone. Adam Milne took 2 wickets giving only 10 runs in 4 overs and Mitchell McClenaghan also took 2 big wickets. Rest of the bowlers also showed discipline due to which Zimbabwe could only reach 118/8. Ultimately New Zealand won the match by 80 runs and that victory made their dominance stronger.
Although today's team is different, there are new players and a new era of cricket is being played. But history tells us that Zimbabwe will have to make extra efforts to win against New Zealand in T20I.
