Zimbabwe are not having a good season in Test cricket. They have just one win in the last five test matches. Zimbabwe won the only test against Ireland out of the last five matches. The last test they played was against England where they lost by an inning and 45 runs. Their batting and bowling both collapsed in that match. England scored a massive 565/6 in the first innings with hundreds from Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, and Ollie Pope. Blessing Muzarabani took three and Tanaka Chivanga, Sikandar Raza, and Wessly Madhevere got one wicket each. Zimbabwe’s first inning collapsed at just 265 runs. Brian Bennett scored a brilliant 139 runs supported by Craig Ervine’s 42 runs. Their second innings was not much different, they bowled out on just 255 runs. Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza scored 88 and 60 runs respectively in the second innings but lost the match.
South Africa are fresh off a WTC title victory in England as they broke their 27-year jinx of not winning an ICC title. Some of the players would still be in the celebrations. It was very special for the Proteas. Now it's time for South Africa to start the new Test cycle with two match test series starting today. South Africa have 9 consecutive wins in their last 9 test matches. Talking about the final, South Africa defeated Australia by five wickets. They asked Australia to bat first and restricted them to 121 runs courtesy to a five wicket haul from Kagiso Rabada.
The first inning of South Africa was not as good as they would have wanted as they collapsed on just 138 runs. Temba Bavuma scored 36 runs and David Bedingham scored 45 runs. However the real game started when Australia batted second. South Africa took seven wickets at a score of just 73 but a late comeback from Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc took Australia to a fightable total of 207 runs. South Africa had to chase 282 runs in the fourth innings against a lethal attack of Australia. Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma made the chase look like a walk in the park to win the first title for South Africa.
The pitch of Queens Sports Club remains a little dry. Fast bowlers can get a little swing in the initial overs of the match. The team bowling first on this ground has a little advantage because till now the chasing team has won 12 out of 28 Test matches.
As the match progresses, spinners also come into the game. The average score in the second innings is around 310, but in the fourth innings the pitch becomes slow and the average score is just 180.
The weather is also going to remain a little cold, so bowlers can get a little more help in the first one hour. That is why the team winning the toss can choose to bowl first. Overall, this is a balanced pitch where the ball moves in the first few overs, then the batsmen can also settle down and score runs.
South Africa have dominated Zimbabwe in the test matches winning all the matches they have played against Zimbabwe. South Africa played 9 matches against Zimbabwe winning 8 matches and playing a draw as well. South Africa could be winning this match as well to maintain the winning streak further long.
The last match between South Africa and Zimbabwe was back in 2017 where South Africa defeated Zimbabwe by a massive innings and 120 runs. Aiden Markram stood high in that match as well for South Africa scoring 125 runs while Morne Morkel and Keshav Maharaj took five wickets in first and second innings respectively.
