Punjab Kings have breached the Chepauk fortress as Shreyas Iyer leads his team to a fantastic victory against the five-time champions by four wickets. It is the fifth time CSK has lost at home this season. It was another low for the home side as, for the first time in their history, they lost five games at Chepauk.
Punjab Kings are at 170/3 after 17 overs. Need 21 runs in 18 balls. Shreyas: 71* (39), Shashank: 13* (9)
Shreyas Iyer has played one of the best knocks of the season. The PBKS skipper has played some calculative shots during his stay at the crease. Pathirana’s poor time while bowling death overs got much worse as the right-handed batter took the attack against him. He smashed a couple of sixes on the trot before a deft touch against a perfect yorker earned him another four.
Punjab Kings are at 139/3 after 15 overs. Need 52 runs in 30 balls. Shreyas: 53* (34), Shashank: 1* (2)
Ravindra Jadeja has taken a great catch to get CSK back into this game. Pathirana, coming on to bowl the 15th over, was smashed for a four by Nehal Wadhera on the second ball. It seemed like the next ball would travel too, but a fine low catch from Jadeja meant that Wadhera had to make the long way back to the pavilion.
Punjab Kings are at 131/2 after 14 overs. Need 60 runs in 36 balls. Shreyas: 50* (32), Wadhera: 1* (1)
Shreyas Iyer has switched gears at the best possible time for Punjab Kings. The skipper struck a six and a four in the 14th over and completed his fifty in 32 balls in the same over as well.
The asking rate is now exactly 10 runs per over. Noor and Jadeja have three overs in the bank, which could prove to be pretty crucial in the chase.
Punjab Kings are at 116/2 after 13 overs. Need 75 runs in 42 balls. Shreyas: 36* (27)
After a 14-run over from Pathirana, the hosts have pulled things back quite nicely in the last couple of overs. The Sri Lankan pacer dropped a fairly straightforward catch as well off Noor Ahmad’s bowling. However, he breathed a sigh of relief as Prabhsimran was dismissed in the same over.
Sam Curran gave away only five runs in the 12th over. Noor gave nine runs in the following over and picked up a wicket as well.
Punjab Kings are at 102/1 after 11 overs. Need 89 runs in 54 balls. Prabhsimran: 51* (31), Shreyas: 25* (20)
The asking rate for PBKS is hovering near 10 runs per over. Even though more often than not the chasing team will back themselves in such a situation, a wicket here could change things very quickly. Prabhsimran Singh struck a six on the first ball he faced from Matheesha Pathirana and ended the 11th over with a four. He scored yet another fifty, and the visitors would want him to carry on with this knock to seal the game.
Pathirana has been pretty expensive in the last three games and has bowled many wides as well. The Sri Lankan pacer would need to bounce back strongly if CSK has any chance of defending this total.
Punjab Kings are at 81/1 after 9 overs. Need 110 runs in 66 balls. Prabhsimran: 39* (25), Shreyas: 17* (14)
Prabhsimran Singh has taken the attack against Noor Ahmad. The match was going to be won by how the PBKS batters play spin tonight. The Afghan wrist spinner has been the third-highest wicket-taker this season. The right-handed batter struck a four and a six off consecutive deliveries and pushed the hosts to the back foot.
Punjab Kings are at 68/1 after 8 overs. Need 123 runs in 72 balls. Prabhsimran: 28* (22), Shreyas: 15* (11)
Shreyas Iyer has not been dismissed after scoring more than 10 runs without scoring a fifty this season. He has already scored 15 runs tonight against the men in yellow. However, with the asking rate already more than 10 runs per over, Shreyas would need to make his stay count here at Chepauk.
Punjab Kings are at 51/1 after 6 overs. Need 140 runs in 14 overs. Prabhsimran: 21* (18), Shreyas: 5* (3)
Ravindra Jadeja, coming on to bowl the final over of the power play, gave away only six runs. The hosts ended the first six overs on a high with a quiet over.
Punjab Kings are at 45/1 after 5 overs. Need 146 runs in 15 overs. Prabhsimran: 20* (14), Shreyas: 0* (1)
Khaleel Ahmed has overtaken Mohammed Siraj on the list for the most wickets in the power play. The left-arm pacer bowling his third over dismissed Priyansh Arya after being hit for two fours by the same batter in the over.
Punjab Kings are at 36/0 after 4 overs. Need 155 runs in 16 overs. Priyansh: 15* (11), Prabhsimran: 20* (13)
Prabhsimran Singh was batting at run-a-ball pace for some time. He corrected that by charging down the pitch and lofting the second delivery of the fourth over for a six over the long-on boundary. The right-handed batter played a lap shot for a four to end the over.
Punjab Kings are at 17/0 after 2 overs. Need 174 runs in 18 overs. Priyansh: 14* (9), Prabhsimran: 3* (3)
Priyansh Arya seems to be batting in a single gear so far in the innings. The left-handed batter, after smashing two fours in the first over, played a pull shot against Anshul Kamboj to get his third boundary.
Punjab Kings are at 8/0 after 1 over. Need 183 runs in 19 overs. Priyansh: 8* (6), Prabhsimran: 0* (0)
Priyansh Arya got going with a couple of fours against Khaleel Ahmed in the first over. The last time these two sides met, the left-handed batter struck a great century. Can he do something similar tonight?
It was a brilliant display of batting from Sam Curran as finally a batter stepped up for the Super Kings at home. The English batter top scored for the hosts with a knock of 88 runs in only 47 deliveries. He shared a crucial 78-run stand with Dewald Brevis for the fourth wicket. The partnership came at a crucial time for the hosts after they had lost three wickets with 48 runs on the board. The PBKS bowlers gave away a few extras, which meant that CSK ended up with a total of 190 runs.
It looked like a one-way show from the hosts before Yuzvendra Chahal picked up his second hat-trick in the history of the Indian Premier League. The right-arm leg spinner bowling the penultimate over dismissed MS Dhoni on the second ball of the over. On the final three balls, he dismissed Deepak Hooda, Anshul Kamboj, and Noor Ahmad.
All eyes would be on Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya, who have provided the Punjab Kings with some great starts this season. It will be essential for them to go big once again as they attempt to chase down this total.
Chennai Super Kings are at 160/4 after 16 overs. Curran: 81* (39), Dube: 1* (2)
Suryansh Shedge is bowling a similar sort of line and length, and most deliveries have been off-pace. Curran has been at the crease for a long time and has seen Shedge bowling a couple of overs at similar speeds. It meant that the left-handed batter lined him up pretty easily. He was welcomed into the attack with a couple of sixes on the trot. He was given a free hit, but thanks to a marvellous effort at the boundary from Shreyas Iyer, a third six was stopped. He struck two fours as well in the over and has already gone past the highest individual score for any CSK batter this season.
Chennai Super Kings are at 134/3 after 15 overs. Curran: 56* (32), Dube: 1* (2)
Azmatullah Omarzai, after conceding 31 runs in his three overs, has finally got his name in the wickets column. The Afghan pacer struck right after the strategic timeout as he clean bowled Dewald Brevis on the first ball of the 15th over. It is pretty hot and humid in Chennai, and the shot from the South African batter looked pretty tired.
Meanwhile, Sam Curran has scored a crucial fifty for the Super Kings. The left-handed batter reached the milestone in only 30 balls. He has batted positively in spite of being soaked in sweat. He struck a four on the third ball of the over as the over went for eight runs.
Chennai Super Kings are at 126/3 after 14 overs. Curran: 49* (29), Brevis: 32* (25)
Marco Jansen came back into the attack with Shreyas Iyer looking to break the partnership. However, the South African pacer gave away nine runs in the 14th over and was still unable to get a wicket for his skipper.
Chennai Super Kings are at 117/3 after 13 overs. Curran: 48* (26), Brevis: 26* (22)
Suryansh Shedge, after starting his spell quietly with a five-run over, was welcomed with a four by Sam Curran on the first ball of the second over. However, he made sure that it was another economical over for the visitors by giving away only five singles in the rest of the over.
Chennai Super Kings are at 108/3 after 12 overs. Curran: 41* (22), Brevis: 24* (20)
Sam Curran and Dewald Brevis have brought up a fifty-run partnership for the hosts. The two joined each other at a tumultuous time when CSK had lost three wickets with only 48 runs on the board. If the two overseas batters continue to bat for a few more overs, then the men in yellow could post a daunting total. After a five-run over from Shedge, Omarzai released the pressure by giving away 14 runs in the 12th.
Chennai Super Kings are at 94/3 after 11 overs. Curran: 31* (18), Brevis: 23* (18)
First signs of Suryansh Shedge as a bowler in the IPL. The Mumbai-born all-rounder mostly bowled off-pace deliveries and decreased the rate of scoring with a five-run over.
Chennai Super Kings are at 80/3 after 9 overs. Curran: 28* (15), Brevis: 12* (9)
Sam Curran has taken on the mantle of scoring against the spin bowlers. The left-handed batter struck only the second six of the innings in the eighth over against Brar. In the next over, he welcomed Yuzvendra Chahal into his second over with a couple of boundaries on the first two balls. A short ball from the right-arm leg spinner was dispatched for a six by Dewald Brevis.
Chennai Super Kings are at 55/3 after 7 overs. Curran: 11* (8), Brevis: 4* (4)
Yuzvendra Chahal replaced Azmatullah Omarzai in the attack right after the power play. The veteran leg spinner bowled a quiet over and did not give any room to the batters. Only seven runs came off his first over.
Chennai Super Kings are at 48/3 after 6 overs. Curran: 8* (5), Brevis: 0* (1)
Harpreet Brar came on to bowl the final over of the power play, and it seemed that he released the pressure created by the pacers in the first five overs. However, the left-arm spinner, after bowling a few loose deliveries, made a strong comeback in the over and dismissed Ravindra Jadeja. Jadeja had smashed Brar for three fours in the over. Even though CSK pushed their run rate to eight runs per over, they have lost three wickets in the process.
Chennai Super Kings are at 36/2 after 5 overs. Curran: 8* (5), Jadeja: 5* (7)
The hosts are the only team to have batted with a run rate less than eight runs per over in the power play this season. They have similarly gone about their business tonight. In the first five overs, CSK has only scored 36 runs for the loss of two wickets. Azmatullah Omarzai, bowling his first over of the game, gave away only eight runs in the fifth over.
Chennai Super Kings are at 28/2 after 4 overs. Curran: 5* (3), Jadeja: 0* (3)
It is a popular saying that one wicket brings two. Arshdeep Singh broke the opening partnership in the previous over. Marco Jansen joined his opening bowling partner as he dismissed Ayush Mhatre on the very first ball of the fourth over.
Chennai Super Kings are at 22/1 after 3 overs. Mhatre: 6* (4), Curran: 0* (1)
Arshdeep Singh made a strong comeback in the over. After being hit for a four and a six by Shaik Rasheed, the left-arm pacer finally dismissed the young batter with a delivery that was wide outside off stump.
Arshdeep, unlike his first over, got the ball to move around in the third over. However, he was unable to maintain a decent line and bowled a couple of wides down the leg side. He overcorrected his line and pitched it to the middle-stump and was clubbed for a four down the ground by Rasheed. A bouncer on the fourth ball went for a six over the fine-leg boundary before dismissing Rasheed on the very next ball.
Chennai Super Kings are at 8/0 after 2 overs. Rasheed: 1* (8), Mhatre: 6* (4)
A deft touch earned Chennai Super Kings their first boundary. It was Ayush Mhatre who guided the second ball from Marco Jansen to the third man boundary. However, on the opposite end, Shaik Rasheed is struggling to make contact between the bat and the ball.
Chennai Super Kings are at 3/0 after 1 over. Rasheed: 1* (5), Mhatre: 1* (1)
The two opening batters for the men in yellow started the first innings watchfully. Arshdeep Singh, bowling the first over, gave away only three runs in the first over in spite of not getting much movement in the air.
PBKS won the toss and elected to bowl first at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Shaik Rasheed, Ayush Mhatre, Sam Curran, Ravindra Jadeja, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, Deepak Hooda, MS Dhoni (C and wk), Noor Ahmad, Khaleel Ahmed, Matheesha Pathirana
Priyansh Arya, Shreyas Iyer (C), Josh Inglis (wk), Nehal Wadhera, Shashank Singh, Harpreet Brar, Marco Jansen, Azmatullah Omarzai, Suryansh Shedge, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh
While Chennai Super Kings come into this game having used most of their players this season, the Punjab Kings have a settled group of players on their side. With Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals missing out on a chance to get two points, PBKS could jump to second position with a win tonight.
While both teams have no injury concerns heading into the clash, there could be a few changes in how the visitors line up. Harpreet Brar could be played as a third spinning option with Yuzvendra Chahal and Glenn Maxwell. However, even though Maxwell's off-spin is proving to be potent this season, his batting against the spinners could be worrying on a slow surface in Chennai.
Shaik Rasheed, Ayush Mhatre, Deepak Hooda, Sam Curran, Ravindra Jadeja, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, MS Dhoni(C and wk), Noor Ahmad, Khaleel Ahmed, Matheesha Pathirana, Anshul Kamboj
Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, Shreyas Iyer (C), Josh Inglis (wk), Nehal Wadhera, Shashank Singh, Glenn Maxwell, Azmatullah Omarzai/Xavier Bartlett, Marco Jansen, Harpreet Brar, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal
