Sunrisers Hyderabad registered their first win away from home this season at the Chidambaram Stadium. It was a complete performance from the visitors, led by Harshal Patel in the first innings. While there were a few moments in the second innings where it seemed the game was slipping away from them, Kamindu Mendis and Nitish Kumar Reddy put up a great sixth-wicket stand to lead their side to victory.
Sunrisers Hyderabad are at 127/5 after 16 overs. Need 28 runs in 24 balls. Kamindu: 21* (14), Nitish Reddy: 2* (4)
Kamindu Mendis, after an impressive performance in the first innings, is playing a match-winning knock here. The left-handed batter has scored 21 runs in 14 balls so far. His knock could prove to be the point of difference between a win and a loss for the visitors.
Sunrisers Hyderabad are at 106/4 after 13.5 overs. Need 49 runs in 37 balls. Kamindu: 7* (4)
Noor Ahmad, after picking up a wicket on the last ball of his second over, started with a wide down the leg side that went for a boundary. He was hit for a four by Kamindu Mendis. The first four balls went for 12 runs, but the Afghan spinner made a strong comeback and dismissed Aniket Verma on the fifth ball.
Sunrisers Hyderabad are at 94/4 after 13 overs. Need 61 runs in 42 balls. Aniket: 19* (18), Kamindu: 0* (0)
Matheesha Pathirana came into the attack in the 13th over. The Sri Lankan pacer started his spell with a wide. He has been guilty of bowling wides down the leg side throughout the season.
Sunrisers Hyderabad are at 90/4 after 12 overs. Need 65 runs in 48 balls. Aniket: 17* (12)
Noor Ahmad got himself into the wickets column as he dismissed Ishan Kishan on the last ball of the 12th over. He was hit for a six on the ball before picking up the wicket.
Sunrisers Hyderabad are at 80/3 after 11 overs. Need 75 runs in 54 balls. Kishan: 37* (30), Aniket: 15* (10)
It is the first time since his century from the first SRH game that Ishan Kishan is looking in some good touch. It will be essential for the visitors that he and Aniket put up a partnership that can win them this game.
Sunrisers Hyderabad are at 69/3 after 10 overs. Need 86 runs in 60 balls. Kishan: 33* (26), Aniket: 8* (8)
While Ravindra Jadeja is creating some pressure from one end, Sam Curran is losing the plot. The left-arm spinner has given only six runs in his two overs. However, at the opposite end, Curran has conceded 25 runs in his two overs.
Sunrisers Hyderabad are at 54/3 after 8.1 overs. Need 101 runs in 71 balls. Kishan: 27* (23)
Ravindra Jadeja started his spell with great control over giving away only five runs. However, the need of the hour for the hosts was taking wickets. He did not disappoint as he got the better of an in-form Heinrich Klaasen on the first ball of his second over.
Sunrisers Hyderabad are at 54/2 after 8 overs. Need 101 runs in 12 overs. Kishan: 27* (23), Klaasen: 7* (7)
Sam Curran, playing his first game after a few days, had a disappointing time with the bat in hand in the first innings. His spell in the second innings started off poorly. The left-arm medium pacer gave away 12 runs. The asking rate, which was close to nine runs per over at the end of the seventh over, is now 8.42.
Sunrisers Hyderabad are at 42/2 after 7 overs. Need 113 runs in 13 overs. Kishan: 20* (19), Klaasen: 2* (5)
Ravindra Jadeja was introduced into the attack right after the power play. The left-arm spinner bowled defensively and gave away only five runs in his first over.
Sunrisers Hyderabad are at 37/2 after 6 overs. Need 118 runs in 14 overs. Kishan: 17* (15), Klaasen: 0* (3)
Chennai Super Kings have started on a positive note in the power play. The hosts not only contained the destructive top order of SRH but also dismissed both openers. Anshul Kamboj, bowling his third over on the trot, dismissed Travis Head in the sixth over. Heinrich Klaasen, after an impressive knock in the previous game, was handed a promotion in the batting order and came to bat at number four.
Sunrisers Hyderabad are at 36/1 after 5 overs. Need 119 runs in 15 overs. Head: 19* (15), Kishan: 16* (13)
Noor Ahmad was brought into the attack in the power play itself. The left-arm spinner would have a huge role to play in the game if the hosts go on to defend this total.
Sunrisers Hyderabad are at 21/1 after 3 overs. Need 134 runs in 17 overs. Head: 6* (5), Kishan: 14* (11)
Is tonight the night when Ishan Kishan finds his form back? The left-handed batter has scored 14 runs in 11 balls and has already hit three fours. Can he lead his side to a victory and find some form?
Sunrisers Hyderabad are at 6/1 after 1 over. Need 149 runs in 19 overs. Head: 4* (3), Kishan: 1* (1)
While it was a first-ball wicket in the first innings, Khaleel Ahmed struck with his second ball and dismissed Abhishek Sharma. The left-handed batter attempting a punch drive played it straight to the fielder at cover, Ayush Mhatre. The CSK pacer has got the crowd chanting again. It is the perfect start for the hosts as they try to defend a low score. Abhishek’s scalp was Khaleel’s eighth wicket in the power play.
A complete bowling performance from the Orange Army has allowed them to bowl out the hosts for a score of only 154 runs. It was a sorry-looking scorecard for the five-time champions, as apart from Ayush Mhatre and Dewald Brevis, no batter played a decent knock. Brevis top-scored with a 42-run knock while Mhatre scored 30 off 19 in the power play. However, none of the other batters played with any attacking intent.
For the Pat Cummins-led side, apart from Zeeshan Ansari, every bowler picked up a wicket at least. Ansari, too, would have gotten a wicket next to his name had Harshal Patel not dropped a fairly simple catch. Harshal was, however, the pick among the bowlers as he picked up four wickets. In the last 33 balls, the bowlers conceded only two boundaries.
Chennai Super Kings are at 133/7 after 17 overs. Hooda: 8* (9), Kamboj: 2* (3)
Harshal Patel has dismissed the fan favorite, MS Dhoni, in the 17th over. The right-arm pacer picked up his third wicket. The crowd at the Chidambaram Stadium has been silenced as the CSK skipper walks back to the pavilion, having scored only six runs in 10 balls. The hosts are in deep trouble and could struggle to score even 160 in the first innings.
Chennai Super Kings are at 130/6 after 16 overs. Hooda: 8* (8), Dhoni: 6* (8)
Pat Cummins came back into the attack and bowled a great over. The SRH skipper gave away only three singles in the over and exerted a huge amount of pressure on the CSK batters.
Chennai Super Kings are at 127/6 after 15 overs. Hooda: 6* (5), Dhoni: 5* (5)
The moment MS Dhoni comes to the crease, Pat Cummins has brought his leg spinner, Zeeshan Ansari, back into the attack. Playing his 400th T20 match, the CSK skipper has struggled against spinners in the last few years. However, the veteran batter stepped up to the challenge and struck a boundary on the second ball of the 15th over.
Chennai Super Kings are at 119/6 after 14 overs. Hooda: 3* (3), Dhoni: 1* (1)
Shivam Dube is once again out for a pretty low score. Veteran pacer Jaydev Unadkat got the better of the CSK batter with a slower delivery. Dube was looking to muscle this delivery over the long-on boundary but could not connect sweetly. After scoring nine runs in his first three balls, Dube’s knock ended with only three more runs in nine balls.
The middle-order batting has been a cause of worry for Chennai Super Kings in the season so far. Deepak Hooda, playing a match after missing out on a couple of games, has only scored three runs of the three balls he has faced.
Chennai Super Kings are at 115/5 after 13 overs. Dube: 11* (6), Hooda: 1* (1)
Harshal Patel, after dropping a fairly straightforward catch in the seventh over, came back to the action in the 13th over. The right-arm pacer returned to bowl his second over. He too had to face the wrath of Brevis before a blinder of a catch from Kamindu Mendis ended Brevis’ innings. It was a crucial over for the visitors after the previous over went for 20 runs. Harshal made ammends for his mistake in the field earlier and picked up his second wicket of the match.
Chennai Super Kings are at 107/4 after 12 overs. Brevis: 36* (22), Dube: 10* (4)
Dewald Brevis’ strike rate had come down drastically in the last couple of overs. However, the South African batter welcomed Kamindu Mendis into his third over with a six. Mendis dragged one down and was struck for another six by Brevis on the fourth ball of the over. He ended the over with another six over long-off this time around.
Before this over, the Sri Lankan spinner had only conceded six runs in his two overs. The last two overs have allowed the hosts to regain some momentum in their batting. The hosts have scored 31 runs off the last 12 deliveries.
Chennai Super Kings are at 87/4 after 11 overs. Brevis: 17* (17), Dube: 9* (3)
Mohammed Shami came back into the attack, giving the spin bowlers a break. The right-arm pacer started his over with a few great deliveries. However, he attempted a yorker on the fifth ball, which came as a full toss and was smashed for a four by Dube. The left-hander struck a boundary to end the over as well as to regain some momentum for the hosts.
Chennai Super Kings are at 76/4 after 10 overs. Brevis: 14* (13), Dube: 1* (1)
Kamindu Mendis has put Jadeja out of his misery. The ambidextrous bowler, bowling with his right arm, clean bowled the left-handed batter. Jadeja in spite of being given a life in the seventh over, could not make the most of the opportunity. He has struggled against spinners throughout the season and was once again caught lacking against SRH spinners.
Chennai Super Kings are at 73/3 after 9 overs. Jadeja: 21* (16), Brevis: 12* (9)
Ravindra Jadeja gets away with a six off the first ball of the ninth over. Even though it went above the long-on boundary, it was not a perfect connection from the left-handed batter. CSK at this moment will take any six that comes their way. This has been their only six of the match so far.
Chennai Super Kings are at 61/3 after 8 overs. Jadeja: 11* (12), Brevis: 10* (7)
Ravindra Jadeja has been one of the poorest batters against spin this season. While his strike rate has gone up against the fast bowlers, he is struggling against the tweakers. Even after being handed a life in the seventh over, he continues to bat in his shell. He faced five balls from Kamindu Mendis in the eighth over and could score only a couple of runs.
Chennai Super Kings are at 58/3 after 7 overs. Jadeja: 9* (7), Brevis: 9* (6)
Harshal Patel dropped a dolly to hand Ravindra Jadeja a second life early in his innings. Dewald Brevis, playing his first game of the season, has started his knock positively. The South African batter smashed a four down the ground in the seventh over. It was the first sign of spin from the visitors, with Zeeshan Ansari coming into the attack.
Chennai Super Kings are at 50/3 after 6 overs. Jadeja: 8* (5), Brevis: 2* (2)
Pat Cummins came on to bowl the final over of the power play. The SRH skipper had bowled an expensive first over but bounced back strongly with a wicket in his second. Cummins dismissed Mhatre, who was looking pretty good on the third ball. The CSK opening batter had looked really strong against short-pitched deliveries, but an off-pace ball from Cummins on a full length outfoxed the young batter.
Chennai Super Kings are at 45/2 after 5 overs. Mhatre: 29* (17), Jadeja: 6* (3)
Harshal Patel struck with his third ball. The right-arm pacer came to the attack to bowl the fifth over. He had bowled the two deliveries before the dismissal wide of off. Harshal continued the pattern again, but Sam Curran was trying to pull it over deep mid-wicket, but could only find the fielder, Aniket Verma, stationed there.
Chennai Super Kings are at 37/1 after 4 overs. Mhatre: 28* (16), Curran: 8* (8)
Jaydev Unadkat replaced Pat Cummins in the attack and started his spell for the night with an expensive over. Like Shami and Cummins, the left-arm pacer too faced the wrath of Mhatre, who hit a couple of fours on the third and fourth balls of the over. In his short innings, the 17-year-old from Mumbai has already smashed six fours.
Chennai Super Kings are at 27/1 after 3 overs. Mhatre: 19* (11), Curran: 7* (7)
Ayush Mhatre, after putting on a show against the Mumbai Indians in his debut IPL game, has continued with his shots. Facing some of the best pacers in the world, the 17-year-old has not shown any nerves during his 11-ball stay at the crease. Curran too got his first boundary as he smashed Shami for a four to end the over.
Chennai Super Kings are at 17/1 after 2 overs. Mhatre: 14* (7), Curran: 2* (5)
While Mohammed Shami got the Orange Army to a great start, Pat Cummins’ poor form with the new ball continued. Bowling his first ball of the spell, the Australian pacer sprayed the ball outside off, which was struck for a boundary by Mhatre. Sam Curran is still getting his eye in and played a couple of dots in the over from Cummins. However, the Indian batter once again struck a boundary to finish a 10-run over.
Chennai Super Kings are at 7/1 after 1 over. Mhatre: 5* (4), Curran: 1* (2)
It was a first-ball duck for Shaik Rasheed as Mohammed Shami, after missing out on playing the previous game, got the visitors off to a great start. Sam Curran, back into the side, was sent to bat at number three. Shami landed the ball perfectly on the seam and found some movement away from the right-handed batter. The outside edge flew to the first slip, where Abhishek Sharma took a sharp catch.
SRH won the toss and elected to bowl first at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Shaik Rasheed, Ayush Mhatre, Sam Curran, Ravindra Jadeja, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, MS Dhoni (C and wk), Deepak Hooda, Noor Ahmad, Khaleel Ahmed, Matheesha Pathirana
Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Heinrich Klaasen (wk), Aniket Verma, Kamindu Mendis, Pat Cummins (C), Harshal Patel, Jaydev Unadkat, Zeeshan Ansari, Mohammed Shami
Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad have had really poor campaigns so far. Both teams in spite of having some great players in their teams find themselves at the bottom of the points table.
The hosts have already tried out many different players, and even though they are at the bottom of the points table, not many changes will be expected from them. Rachin Ravindra, who has had a poor time in the last few games, could be expected to go out. Young wicketkeeper batter, Vansh Bedi, could be given a chance in place of Rachin. If that indeed happens, then an overseas spot will be vacated, which could get either Dewald Brevis or Sam Curran in the team.
SRH, on the other hand, would want their batters to step up, as in their previous game, they had to use the impact sub in the first innings itself. This meant that the Orange Army was without the services of Mohammed Shami.
Shaik Rasheed, Rachin Ravindra/Vansh Bedi, Ayush Mhatre, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, Vijay Shankar/Sam Curran, Jamie Overton, MS Dhoni (C and wk), Noor Ahmad, Khaleel Ahmed, Matheesha Pathirana, Ravichandran Ashwin
Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Ishan Kishan, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Heinrich Klaasen (wk), Aniket Verma, Pat Cummins (C), Harshal Patel, Jaydev Unadkat, Zeeshan Ansari, Eshan Malinga, Rahul Chahar
