Why was Devon Conway retired?


Like we saw a couple of nights before in the clash between Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants, Devon Conway tonight retired out making way for Ravindra Jadeja.

The Kiwi batter was struggling to make optimum contact in the last few balls he faced and was struggling to run between the wickets as well. He retired himself out so that Ravindra, who is a faster runner and would make a better impact in the match.

10:46 PM: Ferguson breaks the stand
 

Chennai Super Kings are at 152/3 after 16 overs. Need 68 runs in 24 balls. Conway: 60* (43), Dhoni: 1* (1)
 

Lockie Ferguson with the knuckle ball bowled Shivam Dube in the 16th over to break the third-wicket stand. It was an 89-run partnership between Dube and Devon Conway.

Poor fielding from Punjab Kings continues as Shivam Dube now gets dropped by Lockie Ferguson at point. 

10:30 PM: CSK needs 100 runs in the last seven overs
 

Chennai Super Kings are at 120/2 after 13 overs. Need 100 runs in 42 balls. Conway: 44* (35), Dube: 30* (18)
 

With 100 runs needed to win in seven overs, Punjab Kings would be the favorite to win the match. However, the hosts would feel they have missed out on a few chances thanks to some poor fielding.

The asking rate for Chennai Super Kings seems to getting out of reach. Marco Jansen bowled a great over but was unlucky as Shivam Dube was dropped twice in the over. 

10:13 PM: PBKS ahead at the halfway stage

CSK’s innings seem to be going nowhere. Even though Devon Conway has played more than 20 balls he is playing a net negative knock. The first six for them came on the 59th ball of the innings by Shivam Dube.

Skipper, Ruturaj Gaikwad was dismissed by Lockie Ferguson for another low score. The right-handed batter scored only one run before the Kiwi pacer got the better of him. It took only two balls for Ferguson to take the crucial wicket. 

9:55 PM: Glenn Maxwell gets the first wicket
 

Chennai Super Kings are at 62/1 after 7 overs. Need 158 runs in 13 overs. Conway: 23* (19), Gaikwad: 1* (1)

Glenn Maxwell after disappointing with the bat in hand in the first innings bounced back with the ball. Bowling his second over, the right-arm spinner outfoxed Rachin Ravindra who stepped down the pitch but missed the ball completely. Prabhsimran Singh behind the stumps completed the stumping easily with Rachin not even close to the crease.

Chennai Super Kings started their chase on a bright note. The ‘Men in Yellow’ did not lose a single wicket in the powerplay for the first time in the season. 

9:41 PM: Rachin smashes three fours in a row
 

Chennai Super Kings are at 39/0 after 4 overs. Need 181 runs in 16 overs. Rachin: 24* (13), Conway: 15* (11)
 

Chennai Super Kings had once again started on a poor note in the powerplay. However, Rachin Ravindra smashing three boundaries on the trot to end the fourth over got some momentum going in the innings.

Chennai Super Kings has had a cautious start to their innings. The two Kiwi openers smashed a boundary each in the first over against Arshdeep Singh. However, Yash Thakur playing his first match of the season started with a great over. The right-arm pacer constantly beat Devon Conway’s bat. 

9:07 PM: CSK needs 220 runs to win
 

Punjab Kings thanks to a historic knock by Priyansh Arya end up with a total of 219 runs. Shashank Singh too played a handy knock down the order after PBKS had lost its five wickets pretty early in the innings.

8:37 PM: Noor Ahmad gets his first wicket of the night
 

Punjab Kings are at 158/6 after 14 overs. Shashank: 24* (17), Jansen: 4* (2)

Noor Ahmad has dismissed the big fish, Priyansh Arya. The left-handed batter had scored a century and was taking the game away from the five-time champions.

8:32 PM: A century for Priyansh Arya
 

Punjab Kings are at 151/5 after 13 overs. Priyansh: 102* (40), Shashank: 23* (15)
 

Priyansh Arya has basted his way to a sensational century. He has reached the milestone in only 39 balls. The left-handed batter has smashed the fastest century in the season breaking Ishan Kishan’s record. It is the joint fourth fastest century in the history of the IPL.

Punjab Kings are at 108/5 after 11 overs. Priyansh: 67* (32), Shashank: 15* (11)

Noor Ahmad bowling his first over had an expensive start. He was smashed for a six on the first ball he bowled by Shashank Singh. Priyansh Arya too smashed a four in the over.

8:13 PM: Ashwin strikes twice in the over
 

Punjab Kings are at 83/5 after 8 overs. Priyansh: 53* (19) 
 

After going for 21 runs in his first over, Ravichandran Ashwin bounced back strongly. The veteran off-spinner dismissed Nehal Wadhera and Glenn Maxwell in the eighth over as CSK tighten their grip over the clash.

Even though the hosts lost three wickets in the powerplay they still have the ball in their court. Young Priyansh Arya struck a fifty off 19 deliveries only taking the attack against experienced Ravichandran Ashwin.

Khaleel Ahmed after conceding 17 runs in the first over dismissed PBKS’ in-form batter, Shreyas Iyer. The right-handed batter had struck a six in the over but was dismissed on the fourth ball.

7:41 PM: Mukesh picks up his first wicket

Mukesh Choudhary playing only his second game of the season picked up the first wicket for Chennai Super Kings. He bowled a great over giving away only seven runs in his first over.

7:35 PM: An expensive start to the match

Khaleel Ahmed who has been pretty great with the ball in IPL 2025 was smashed for a couple of sixes in the first over by Priyansh Arya.
