Shreyas Iyer has played a captain’s knock at the most important night of the season so far for his team. The right-handed batter became the first captain to lead three different teams in the final of the Indian Premier League. Iyer scored 87 runs in 41 balls and remained not out. After three years, it will be a new champion to be crowned as the Punjab Kings gear up to face the Royal Challengers Bengaluru on the 3rd of June at the same venue.
Punjab Kings are at 173/5 in 17 overs. Need 31 runs in 18 balls. Iyer: 57* (30), Stoinis: 0* (0)
Hardik Pandya has produced a moment of brilliance in the field to effect a run out and send Shashank Singh back to the dugout. The MI skipper had missed a similar throw against the Gujarat Titans at the Wankhede Stadium. However, he hit his target tonight as Mumbai Indians picked up a second wicket in quick succession.
Punjab Kings are at 156/4 in 15.4 overs. Need 48 runs in 26 balls. Iyer: 42* (25)
Ashwani Kumar, after giving away only 13 runs in his first two overs, was welcomed with a six down the ground by Nehal Wadhera. However, as he has done in this game and even in the previous clash against GT, the Indian pacer picked up a crucial wicket. He dismissed Wadhera on the fourth ball of the over.
Punjab Kings could only score five runs off the 15th over, which would have put them under some pressure.
Punjab Kings are at 142/3 in 14 overs. Need 62 runs in 36 balls. Iyer: 40* (22), Wadhera: 37* (22)
PBKS have strung together a couple of big overs. It was Shreyas Iyer with three sixes in the previous over before Wadhera struck a couple of fours against Boult. Even though one of the two boundaries came off an edge, it has still brought the Kings back to the driving seat.
Punjab Kings are at 128/3 in 13 overs. Need 76 runs in 42 balls. Iyer: 37* (20), Wadhera: 27* (18)
After the last two overs went for only 11 runs, Reece Topley has released the pressure in the 13th over. The left-arm pacer was struck for three sixes in a row by Shreyas Iyer. It was some poor bowling from the Englishman as he bowled on the same length at the same speeds, and the same result ensued.
Punjab Kings are at 109/3 in 12 overs. Need 95 runs in 48 balls. Iyer: 19* (15), Wadhera: 26* (17)
Jasprit Bumrah is back in the attack after his first over went for a whopping 20 runs. The right-arm pacer mixed up his speeds in the over. After a four-run over from Ashwani, Bumrah followed up while giving away only seven runs in the 12th over. The asking rate has now climbed up to 11.88 runs per over.
Punjab Kings are at 102/3 in 11 overs. Need 102 runs in 54 balls. Iyer: 18* (14), Wadhera: 20* (12)
Ashwani Kumar is doing a fine job with the ball in hand for the five-time champions. After the last over went for 17 runs, the Indian pacer gave away only four runs in the 11th over.
The asking rate has climbed up to more than 11 runs per over. However, with someone like Shreyas Iyer in the middle, PBKS would not be worrying too much about it.
Punjab Kings are at 98/3 in 10 overs. Need 106 runs in 60 balls. Iyer: 17* (13), Wadhera: 17* (7)
With Shreyas Iyer taking his time, Nehal Wadhera, against his former team, holds the aces at the moment. The left-handed batter struck a six on the second ball of the 10th over against Pandya. Iyer too ramped a short ball to the boundary in the over. Trent Boult dropped a fairly easy catch on the final ball of the over that would have seen Wadhera make the long walk back to the dressing room.
Punjab Kings are at 81/3 in 9 overs. Need 123 runs in 66 balls. Iyer: 11* (10), Wadhera: 6* (4)
The Mumbai Indians have staged a strong comeback in the clash right after the power play. Not only have they dismissed Josh Inglis, but they have also managed to keep a lid on the rate of scoring. Mitchell Santner has been the silent hero in this phase. The Kiwi spinner has given away 15 runs in his two overs, while Hardik picked up the crucial scalp.
Punjab Kings are at 72/3 in 8 overs. Need 132 runs in 72 balls. Iyer: 7* (6), Wadhera: 0* (2)
Hardik Pandya has followed up Mitchell Santner with another great over. After having an off-night with the bat in hand, Pandya struck in his first over and dismissed the danger man, Josh Inglis. He gave away only a couple of runs in the over in addition to picking up a wicket.
Punjab Kings are at 70/2 in 7 overs. Need 134 runs in 78 balls. Inglis: 37* (17), Iyer: 7* (6)
Mitchell Santner will have a huge role to play in the clash after the start that the Punjab Kings have had. The left-arm spinner came into the attack straight after the power play and is facing two of the finest players of spin bowling. He started off with a quiet six-run over.
Punjab Kings are at 64/2 in 6 overs. Need 140 runs in 14 overs. Inglis: 33* (13), Iyer: 5* (4)
Coming into the second innings as an impact sub, Ashwani Kumar has provided the much-needed wicket for his side. Bowling the sixth over, the left-arm pacer dismissed Priyansh Arya on the first ball. After Bumrah’s over went for 20 runs, this wicket would allow MI to crawl back in the game.
Punjab Kings are at 55/1 in 5 overs. Need 149 runs in 15 overs. Arya: 20* (9), Inglis: 29* (12)
Jasprit Bumrah’s attack has been neutralised by Josh Inglis. The right-arm pacer was struck for a four and a six by the Aussie batter on the first three balls of the fifth over. He struck a couple of boundaries on the last two balls as well to completely dominate the over.
Punjab Kings are at 35/1 in 4 overs. Need 169 runs in 16 overs. Arya: 20* (9), Inglis: 9* (6)
Priyansh Arya, facing the left-arm pace of Reece Topley, smashed a four off the first ball of the fourth over. He struck a six off a back-of-the-hand slower delivery on the fourth ball. The over went for 14 runs as the Kings’ chase got going.
Punjab Kings are at 21/1 in 3 overs. Need 183 runs in 17 overs. Arya: 7* (4), Inglis: 8* (5)
Trent Boult failed to strike in his first over, but it is seldom that he goes without a wicket in his opening spell. The left-arm pacer struck on the first ball of the third over to break the opening stand and dismissed Prabhsimran Singh. Josh Inglis, after being hit on his thigh pad on his first ball, got going with a couple of fours. The Aussie batter was named the player of the match the last time these two sides met in the league stage.
Punjab Kings are at 13/0 in 2 overs. Need 191 runs in 18 overs. Arya: 7* (4), Prabhsimran: 6* (8)
Reece Topley, making his debut for the Mumbai Indians, came to bowl the second over. The left-arm pacer last played in the IPL for Royal Challengers Bengaluru and conceded 68 runs in four overs. Priyansh Arya struck a four on the final ball of the over.
Punjab Kings are at 6/0 in 1 over. Need 198 runs in 19 overs. Arya: 1* (1), Prabhsimran: 5* (5)
After a horrendous start in the previous game, Prabshimran Singh opened his account with a four off the first ball. Trent Boult was on the receiving end after coming into the clash with a wicket in his first over from the previous game.
Some poor fielding in the last four overs has meant that the Mumbai Indians end up with a score of 203 runs. Naman Dhir provided a much-needed finish to the innings after Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma laid the foundation in the middle overs. PBKS were penalised for a slow over rate and had to put in an extra fielder inside the 30-yard circle for the last two overs. It resulted in MI scoring 23 runs in the last 12 balls.
Mumbai Indians are at 156/4 after 16 overs. Hardik: 9* (8), Naman: 5* (4)
MI are chasing a strong finish in the last four overs. It will be Arshdeep Singh to bowl a couple of those, with Vyshak chipping in with an over. Shreyas Iyer would need to bowl either Marcus Stoinis or Azmatullah Omarzai for one of those overs. Hardik Pandya has started slowly here and has scored only five runs in the first eight balls he has faced. He added another four runs to his tally courtesy of an overthrow flying to the boundary.
Mumbai Indians are at 146/4 after 15 overs. Hardik: 2* (4), Naman: 2* (2)
Kyle Jamieson has picked up a timely wicket for the Punjab Kings. The five-time champions, after having the game in the grasp, have lost the plot in the last few balls. After Chahal’s wicket of Suryakumar, Jamieson has got rid of Tilak Varma on the first ball of the 15th over. Both set batters for the former champions are back in the dressing room. Hardik Pandya needs to play a captain’s knock to push his team to a good score.
Mumbai Indians are at 142/3 after 14 overs. Tilak: 44* (28), Hardik: 0* (1)
Yuzvendra Chahal has finally got his man in his last over. The right-arm leg spinner had been rather expensive in his spell despite conceding only three runs in his first over. The right-arm leg spinner was struck for a four and a six by Suryakumar in the fourth over, but Chahal had the last laugh as he dismissed the right-hander for the fifth time in T20s.
Mumbai Indians are at 131/2 after 13 overs. Tilak: 43* (27), Suryakumar: 34* (22)
Kyle Jamieson has bowled the best over of the clash. The tall pacer was hit for a couple of fours in the over, giving away only eight runs. He bamboozled Suryakumar multiple times in the over with slow leg-cutters.
Mumbai Indians are at 123/2 after 12 overs. Tilak: 43* (27), Suryakumar: 26* (16)
Yuzvendra Chahal has once again bowled an expensive over. The right-arm leg-spinner was hit for a huge six by Suryakumar Yadav on the first ball of the over. He could not bowl a single dot and allowed the two batters to rotate the strike.
Mumbai Indians are at 112/2 after 11 overs. Tilak: 41* (25), Suryakumar: 17* (12)
Azmatullah Omarzai, in spite of being hit for only a four in the over, conceded 10 runs in the 11th over. The two MI batters are running hard between the wickets, constantly putting the pressure on the PBKS fielders.
Mumbai Indians are at 102/2 after 10 overs. Tilak: 32* (20), Suryakumar: 16* (11)
After scoring only one run off four balls against Chahal in his first over, Suryakumar welcomed him with a six in his second over. Tilak Varma, on the opposite end, too, has got himself in. He struck a huge maximum in the previous over against Vyshak. Chahal, after being hit for a six on the first ball of the over, gave away only four in as many balls. However, the veteran spinner could not close out the over for his side and was hit for another boundary.
Mumbai Indians are at 73/2 after 8 overs. Tilak: 19* (14), Suryakumar: 1* (4)
Yuzvendra Chahal, after missing the previous two games due to a wrist injury, came to the attack right when Suryakumar Yadav came to the crease. The right-arm leg spinner has dismissed Surya four times in T20s.
Mumbai Indians are at 70/2 after 7 overs. Tilak: 17* (12)
Vijaykumar Vyshak has created a great deal of impact in his very first over. The right-arm pacer bowled a great first over and gave away only five runs in the first five balls. The lack of runs persuaded Bairstow to play a ram, which he gloved to the keeper.
Mumbai Indians are at 65/1 after 6 overs. Bairstow: 36* (21), Tilak: 14* (9)
Jonny Bairstow is making the most of his return to IPL 2025. After playing a great innings at the top of the order in the previous clash, he has gotten off to a flying start in this game as well. In the last over of the power play, the English batter smashed Azmatullah Omarzai for a four and a six each to make the most of the restrictions.
Mumbai Indians are at 50/1 after 5 overs. Bairstow: 24* (17), Tilak: 13* (7)
The MI batters are playing their shots on almost every ball. Both Bairstow and Tilak have been fairly lucky with some mis-hits not carrying to fielders. A top edge in the third over earned Bairstow his third boundary of the innings.
Mumbai Indians are at 43/1 after 4 overs. Bairstow: 20* (13), Tilak: 11* (5)
Arshdeep Singh has returned to the attack with a change of ends. The left-arm pacer was struck for a couple of fours by Bairstow in the over. He induced a top-edge from Tilak’s bat with a bouncer, but the ball fell in no man’s land.
Mumbai Indians are at 30/1 after 3 overs. Bairstow: 10* (9), Tilak: 9* (3)
Marcus Stoinis replaced Arshdeep Singh in the attack despite him having a poor record against Rohit Sharma. The Australian all-rounder was struck for a four on the first ball of the over by the former MI captain. However, Stoinis made a strong comeback and dismissed the right-handed batter on the very next ball for the first time in T20s.
To break the three consecutive right-handed batters, Tilak Varma walked in at number three. The left-handed batter struck a six on his second ball, which turned out to be a front-foot no-ball.
Mumbai Indians are at 15/0 after 2 overs. Rohit: 4* (5), Bairstow: 10* (7)
Jonny Bairstow has made up for the slow start in the previous over. The English batter struck a huge six in the second over. Rohit Sharma, on the other hand, was dropped once again like he was in the previous game.
Mumbai Indians are at 4/0 after 1 over. Rohit: 2* (3), Bairstow: 1* (3)
It is a slow start to the second qualifier after some delay due to rain. The first over from Arshdeep Singh did not fetch a lot of runs for the Mumbai Indians. Jonny Bairstow charged down the pitch on the fifth ball, but an in-swing delivery took the ball past his legs for a wide.
The rain has finally stopped, and there is word that the first ball will be bowled at 9:45 PM. It will still be a full game with the two innings being played out for 20 overs.
The start of the all-important Qualifier 2 between the Mumbai Indians and the Punjab Kings has been delayed. As the players were walking onto the field, rain made an interruption. It has been raining steadily in Ahmedabad right now, and the full square has been covered. The good news for the fans is that there is time till 9:30 before we start to lose the overs. However, if the rain persists and a match is not possible, PBKS will go to the final due to finishing in a higher position in the points table.
PBKS won the toss and elected to bowl first at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Priyansh Arya, Josh Inglis (wk), Shreyas Iyer (C), Nehal Wadhera, Marcus Stoinis, Shashank Singh, Azmatullah Omarzai, Kyle Jamieson, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal
Rohit Sharma, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya (C), Naman Dhir, Mitchell Santner, Raj Bawa, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah, Reece Topley
Both Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians, in spite of coming into the clash with totally varying results, would be expected to play with a similar set of players. In the PBKS unit, the only changes that could be made are if Yuvendra Chahal is fit enough to get back in the playing XI. In the last game, Musheer Khan was used as an impact sub with the failure of the batting unit. He might have to sit out in Ahmedabad.
For the Mumbai Indians, Deepak Chahar missed out on the previous game with a niggle. If he manages to get fit for the clash against the Punjab Kings, then there could be a shuffle in the lineup. Richard Gleeson would make way for Chahar, which would free up an overseas slot to be used in the batting order. Charith Asalanka could replace Raj Angad Bawa in that case.
Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, Josh Inglis (wk), Shreyas Iyer (C), Nehal Wadhera, Marcus Stoinis, Shashank Singh, Azmatullah Omarzai, Harpreet Brar, Kyle Jamieson, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal/Vijaykumar Vyshak
