Axar Patel was retained by the Delhi Capitals for ₹ 16.50 Cr and was handed over the Captaincy of the team. On the back of crucial performances in Champions Trophy and T20 world cup Axar Patel again came into the spotlight and this was one of the reason why Delhi Capitals management decided to give the leadership role to him ahead of seasoned IPL captains like KL Rahul and Faf du plessis. Axar Patel made his IPL debut on April 18, 2014, playing for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) against Chennai Super Kings in Abu Dhabi. He began his IPL career by taking the wicket of Brendon McCullum. While he had a successful debut, giving away 34 runs in his four overs, he was a crucial part of Punjab's run to the final, taking 17 wickets in that season.

But a move to Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) the following season helped him become an established name in the competition with 17 wickets in a breakthrough season. He was retained for a whooping price of INR 18 crore, marking a significant jump from his previous salary of INR 9 crore with the same franchise. Not only that, Axar was appointed as Delhi Capitals' captain for 2025.

Known for his accuracy Axar Patel is the key spinner for whichever team he has played. In his debut season Axar Patel impressed everyone by his economical bowling he took 17 wickets and had an economy under 7.00 which was quite exceptional for a bowler in his debut year. Axar Patel has also taken a hattrick against the Gujarat Lions in 2016 , he took 4 wickets in 5 balls in that over. But one of the weak point came when MS Dhoni smashed him a last ball six to win the match. Axar Patel came back stronger and with his consistent performance and accurate bowling he got the better of batters.
Axar Patel is well known for antics on the field, always fielding in the hotspots making some important contributions and taking some brilliant catches. His presence on field lifts up the moral of the team which was seen in the T20 world cup as well. Providing all the three dimensions Axar is the best player one could ask for.
