A terrific start to his captaincy stint in the ongoing England vs India 5 match Test series has put Shubman Gill in a position where he is targeting greatness. The Indian captain is chasing two milestones in the next two matches and one of them is the highest runs scored by an Indians batsman in a Test series.
This record currently belongs to the legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar. The Little Master holds the record for the past several decades with 774 runs in a single series vs West Indies back in the year 1971. He achieved the record in a 4 match series vs West Indies. He scored 4 centuries and 3 half-centuries in the series.
Now Shubman Gill is very close to taking this record. Gill has already scored 607 runs in 6 innings so far and there are 2 matches to go, meaning Gill has a maximum of 4 innings. He scored a double-century in the second test that helped India win by 336 runs. He still needs 168 runs (41.75 average runs per innings) from there and looking at his form in this series, this is very much possible unless something drastic happens.
While Shubman Gill will be looking to win his debut Test series as the captain of the team, but other than, he is also targeting the record for highest run scored in a Test series. Australian cricket icon and legendary batsman Don Bradman currently holds the record.
The new India captain has been in great touch in this series. In the first two Tests, he hit a total of 585 runs. He was on a great run of breaking records in the second test. However he scored only 6 and 16 runs in the next two innings.
The legendary Don Bradman currently holds the record for most runs scored in a Test series is 974 runs in 7 innings. Gill's already scored 607 runs in just 6 innings, so he's got four more innings to beat this record.
However, it is not an easy road from here. Gill still requires 367 runs (91.75 average runs per innings) just to match Bradman's record. The Indian captain made the most of the batting friendly surface in the first two teams but fumbled in the 4th Test when there was some sort of help for the bowlers. Now, it's a tough challenge for the Indian captain.
