This robot talks and plays with players, umpires, and fans, doing fun things like handshakes, jumping, and making heart shapes. At first, it didn’t have a name. So, IPL asked fans to vote online. The name ‘Champak’ got the most votes. As the IPL said in its statement, “Champak won by a landslide.” The news sparked laughter, brought back memories, and quickly led to a wave of memes on social media.
After greeting stars like MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya with fun gestures, the robot dog has quickly become a familiar sight in the IPL. It is equipped with advanced features— it can walk, run, jump, stand on its back legs, and has a high-quality camera. This lets it capture special behind-the-scenes moments and give fans fresh, never-before-seen views of the action. In its launch video, former New Zealand cricketer and commentator Danny Morrison even called it his “new broadcast buddy.”
Since its launch, Champak has played many roles. It has carried the toss coin at several matches, including the game between the Mumbai Indians and the Sunrisers Hyderabad. With its fun, pet-like nature and smart tech features, Champak has become a crowd favorite, adding a fun and futuristic vibe to the IPL."
Not everyone has been impressed. The publisher of the original Champak comic has raised objections about the robot’s name and taken the matter to the Delhi High Court over trademark infringement. After reviewing the case, the court has now issued a notice to the BCCI, asking for their reply.
