The West Indies team will be hoping to finish the undoing from the 1st T20I. The Caribbean side came close to victory in the 1st T20I but eventually the visitors reigned supreme.
West Indies scored 189 runs in 20 overs. However, they were at one stage well set for more than 200 runs. Although Brandon King was dismissed after scoring 18 runs, the carnage from Roston Chase and Shai Hope helped the West Indies significantly.
The duo added 91 runs for the 2nd wicket before Chase departed after scoring 60 runs off 32 balls while Shai Hope scored 55 runs. Shimron Hetmyer also played a good knock as he scored 38 runs off 19 balls.
For Australia, Ben Dwarshuis picked 4 wickets while Sean Abbott, Cooper Connolly, Nathan Ellis and Mitchell Owen took 1 wicket each.
The chase looked a little difficult as Australia were 4 wickets down for 78 runs at one stage. However, the game changed on its head after half-centuries from Cameron Green and Mitchell Owen saved the day for the Aussies. Green smashed 51 runs from 26 balls at a crazy 196.15 strike rate, and Owen scored 50 off 27 balls with a strike rate of 185.19.
The Aussies chased the target in 18.5 overs. The trio of Jason Holder, Alzarri Joseph and Gudakesh Motie took 2 wickets each for the Caribbean side.
Australia have taken 1-0 lead in the series already and the second match will be played at the Sabina Park itself on 23 July, 2025 as the Aussies are aiming to go up 2-0 in the series, while the West Indies are hoping to level it at 1-1. The match will be played from 5:30 A.M IST.
Both West Indies and Australia sit on the different end of recent form. The hosts West Indies continue to struggle in T20I cricket. In their last 5 matches, West Indies have lost 4 matches and won only one, against Ireland.
As for the Aussies, in their last 5 T20I matches, Australia have won four matches while lost only one. The one defeat was against England in September 2024. After that, Australia won the T20I series vs Pakistan 3-0 and already won the 1st T20I vs West Indies.
West Indies
West Indies won't be happy with the outcome in the previous match. Initially they looked well on their way to 200 plus score but eventually could score only 189 runs. Later, they had Australia 4 down for 78 runs but still allowed vs Kangaroos to win from there.
They are still likely to be going unchanged in this match. Keen eyes will be on the likes of Shai Hope, Brandon King, Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer, Sherfane Rutherford with the bat. Meanwhile, their bowling did fairly well initially. Alzarri Joseph, Gudakesh Motie, Akeal Hosein, Jason Holder will be the key bowlers for the Maroons.
In addition, this match will be Andre Russell's last international match. He had officially announced before the series that he would retire from International after the 2nd T20I at his homeland in Jamaica.
Australia will also most likely field an unchanged line-up hoping to carry on their winning momentum from the last match. They have an explosive batting line-up including Mitchell Marsh, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Josh Inglis, Cameron Green and Mitchell Owen.
As for their bowling, the Kangaroos struggled initially in the series. With key bowlers like Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins unavailable, Australia trusted other names. In the match, Ben Dwarshuis secured four wickets, whereas Sean Abbott and Nathan Ellis maintained average performances early on but enhanced their impact in the final overs.
Both West Indies and Australia share an intense rivalry between the two teams. There have been a total of 22 T20I matches played between the two teams and both the sides have in-fact won 11 matches each in the head-to-head battle.
In Kingston, Jamaica, Sabina Park stands out as a cricket ground known for its batting-friendly conditions. There was nothing different in the first match. There is pace, bounce and movement available with the new ball but the spinners can be effective too, though not totally a spin friendly surface. The shorter boundaries also aids the run scoring. The average score at the venue in T20Is is 165. There is no advantage for either batting first or bowling first, so toss won't matter much. It is all about which side plays the best cricket on the day.
West Indies captain Shai Hope has been a brilliant player in all formats of the game for the Maroons. Although not considered ideal for T20Is initially, he has improved his game significantly. He scored 55 runs in the 1st T20I and will be hoping to carry on his form.
West Indies’ spin bowler Gudakesh Motie is going to be the key player for the hosts. Motie has been in great form recently. He already took 2 wickets in the 1st T20I and coming off the back of a 9 wicket performance in the Global Super League for the Guyana Amazon Warriors.
Keep an eye on Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh who has revolutionized his career as the opening batter in T20 cricket. During the IPL 2025 season, he scored a total of 627 runs as the opening batter for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). He already scored 24 runs in the 1st T20I.
Ben Dwarshuis, the 31-year-old left-arm medium pacer, has been in exceptional form recently. With key fast bowlers unavailable, he’s a player to watch out for. He picked 4 wickets in the 1st T20I. He took 18 wickets in 13 matches in the T20 Blast 2025.
If the first T20I between West Indies and Australia was anything to go by, the 2nd T20I is going to be another cracker of a match between the two teams.
The 1st T20I was an explosive match between the two teams. Both the teams are filled with some explosive batters in the team and we expect nothing less than what we witnessed in the 1st T20Is.
The T20I will also be played at the same venue and even though West Indies controlled both the innings early on, Australia, even without the experienced guys, made a great comeback.
Australia most likely have the edge over the West Indies batters, but the Australian bowling was initially not upto the mark. However, given the struggles of the Caribbean team, Australia is once again the favourite out of the two to win the match.
