Suryakumar Yadav was named the player of the match for his incredible batting performance. The right-handed batter scored 73 runs in only 43 balls. His performance stood out on a surface where all the other batters struggled massively. He struggled in the initial stage of the innings. He had scored only 28 runs in the first 22 balls he faced. Surya took the attack against the DC bowlers once TIlak Varma was dismissed. The 34-year-old went on to score 45 runs in the 21 balls and powered the Mumbai Indians to a score of 180 runs. He smashed seven fours and four sixes in the knock.
Suryakumar Yadav played one of his best knocks of the season. The right-handed batter struggled initially as the spinners and fast bowlers with off-pace deliveries wreaked havoc on Mumbai Indians. He still took his chances against poor balls. In the last couple of overs, with Mukesh Kumar and Dushmantha Chameera bowling, Surya faced some on-pace deliveries and dispatched them in different parts of the ground. For the 13th time in a row, the right-handed batter scored more than 25 runs. He ended up unbeaten in the first innings and scored 73 runs in 43 balls, hitting seven fours and four sixes.
Mitchell Santner was the best bowler on display across both teams. The left-arm spinner was at his best, in spite of playing his first game in almost a month. Santer bowled four overs and proved to be quiet miserly. He picked up three wickets dismissing Vipraj Nigam, Sameer Rizvi, and Ashutosh Sharma. However, what set him apart from any other bowler was his change of pace which made the task to hit hom for runs even tougher. His four overs cost only 11 runs and put the DC batters under immense pressure.
It is seldom that the Mumbai Indians produce a match-winning bowling performance without the help of Jasprit Bumrah. While Santner was at the centre of all the attention, Bumrah had his has say over the result of the game as well. The right-arm pacer was introduced into the attack fairly late and came on to bowl his first over after the power play. He picked up three wickets in his spell while giving away only 12 runs.
Kuldeep Yadav after going wicketless in the last few games finally got his 100th scalp in the Indian Premier League. The left-arm wrist-spinner was presented with a pitch that assisted the spin bowlers massively. He made the best use of the conditions and gave away only 22 runs in his four overs while picking up Ryan Rickelton’s wicket.
Delhi Capitals, bowling on an untypical Wankhede pitch were right on the money. Having won the toss, Faf du Plessis made the right decision to bowl first. Even with Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks finding the fence the bowlers stuck to their plans in the first six overs.
The visitors got three wickets in the first seven overs. Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav found it pretty tough to get going as the spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Vipraj Nigam were right on the money. In the absence of Axar Patel, the two wrist spinners bowled with extreme control. Their eight overs resulted in only 47 runs and built up a lot of pressure on the MI batters.
For 18 overs, it looked like that Delhi Capitals had managed to put a lid over the scoring rate. However, thanks to Naman Dhir and Suryakumar, the five-time champions ended the first innings on a great note. The two right-handed batters struck nine boundaries off the last 12 balls to collect 48 runs from the two overs. Naman started the proceedings in the 19th over against Mukesh Kumar. The batter ended up scoring 24 runs in only eight balls. The last over saw a complete domination from Suryakumar.
It seemed like that the Mumbai Indians carried all the momentum from the lasty two overs of the first innings to second innings. Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult early in the second half and got rid of both the opening batters from DC. Will Jacks once again got the better of a left-handed batter. The English off-spinner dismissed Abhishek Porel in the power play.
Jasprit Bumrah was introduced in the attack after the power play and he struck in his very first over. However, it was Mitchell Santner who proved to be the match-winner for the hosts. The left-arm spinner from New Zealand picked dominated the middle overs. He picked up three wickets and gave nothing away to the DC batters. What made his spell stand out was the economy of less than three runs per over.
For the Capitals it was a poor outing with the bat in hand. Barring, Sameer Rizvi, no batter could show any resistance. The shot themselves into the foot by playing needless shots at the start of the innings. The loss of wickets in the power play meant that they could not show much intent when Bumrah and Santner came on to bowl in the middle overs.
