The new squad reveals a blend of emerging talent and experienced players, including Rassie van der Dussen, who stepped up for captaincy in the absence of regular skipper Aiden Markram. Apart from Markram, many South African players are missing from the upcoming T20I Tri-series against Zimbabwe and New Zealand.
Stalwarts like David Miller, Ryan Rickelton, Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, and Tristan Stubbs are in resting mode to ease off the workload following the iconic triumph ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final earlier this month.
Then there is Heinrich Klaasen, who has already announced his retirement from International cricket. While Keshav Maharaj will lead the upcoming two-match Test series against Zimbabwe, starting June 28, he is also absent from the T20I series. Hence, some of the new faces will get a chance ahead of this upcoming T20I setup.
This will be the 50th T20I match, led by the interim skipper Rassie van der Dussen, a prominent batter with years of experience under his captaincy. The mixed squad, including uncapped players, seasonal performers, and missing several stars, signals that South Africa is building a strong squad ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2026 under the new coach, Shukri Conrad.
Rassie van der Dussen (Captain), Dewald Brevis, Corbin Bosch, Gerald Coetzee, Nandre Burger, Reeza Hendricks, George Linde, Rubin Hermann, Kwena Maphaka, Senuran Muthusamy, Lungi Ngidi, Lhuan-dré Pretorius, Nqaba Peter, and Andile Simelane
With the inclusion of the four uncapped players, Cricket South Africa has shown that they are experimenting with their brand new squad ahead of the Tri-series against NZ and ZIM, which is set to be in the next month at Harare Sports Club.
The Uncapped quartet are Corbin Bosch, Lhuan-dré Pretorius, Rubin Hermann, and Senuran Muthusamy. All four are domestic performers, especially Lhuan-dré Pretorius, finishing as the leading run-scorer in the SA20 2025 tournament with an impressive 397 runs at a strike rate of 166. The dynamic batter Pretorious could be a provider of the quick starts and excel South Africa’s scoreboard in the initial overs.
Corbin Bosch is another player emerging from South Africa’s Domestic Cricket, with an impressive T20 record. He played 89 matches and scored 710 runs from 55 innings with a strike rate of 115.07. Medium pacer Corbin aslo scalped the 60 wickets from his 76 T20 innings with an economy rate of 8.36.
Rubin Hermann is a wicketkeeper-batter who provides a batting and a backup keeper option. He also has impressive Domestic stats with 1118 runs from 46 T20 matches with a strike rate of 131.83.
Then we have Senuran Muthusamy, who is a left-handed batting allrounder with a left-arm spinner and a lower-order hitter, adding balance to the squad.
Return of the Key Pacers
South Africa’s two key pacers, Nandre Burger and Gerald Coetzee, are making their International T20 comeback and are ready to ambush the Harare Sports Club in the upcoming series. Both fast bowlers, Burger and Coetzee, who were facing injury setbacks, are now fully recovered and are currently honing their skills in Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025.
Alongside Aiden Markram, many stalwarts are absent from the upcoming T20I series, looking at the packed International calendar with the upcoming white-ball tour of Australia in August and a limited-overs series in India later in 2025. In short, Cricket South Africa is focusing on the wellness of the players and upcoming bigger tournaments. Plus, the situation is also giving a chance to young talent to showcase their skills on the International stage.
The T20I 2025 Tri-series of South Africa, New Zealand, and Zimbabwe will be the first assignment of coach Shukri Conrad since taking charge of SA’s all Men’s Senior Cricket Team. According to Coach Conard, the team selection is based on the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026.
In an interview, he said, “This tri-series is the start of our preparations for the T20 World Cup in 2026. We’re giving opportunities to players who have performed domestically and in leagues like the SA20 and MLC. It’s about building depth and testing combinations in competitive conditions.”
