According to Dr. Debashish Chowdhury, chief physician of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, initial medical examinations were conducted at a local hospital, where mild heart complications were suspected. Chest pain escalated during his transport, preventing further evacuation. Diagnostic assessments later confirmed a critical cardiac event. Dr. Chowdhury stated that this remains a difficult time for everyone and that Tamim is under close observation, with the medical team making every effort to aid his recovery.
The incident took place during the first innings of the 50-over match, shortly after the toss. Family members of Tamim Iqbal are currently en route to Savar.
According to a report by Bangladesh’s Daily Star, one of Iqbal’s two arteries is 100 percent blocked. His family, including Nafees Iqbal and his mother, have arrived at the hospital. An angiogram was conducted by doctors, revealing that one of his arteries is completely blocked, while the other is partially obstructed.
Tamim holds the fourth position among the top run-scorers in the Dhaka Premier League 2024-25. A total of 368 runs have been scored by him in seven innings, maintaining an average of 73.60, which includes two centuries. His strike rate of 102.50 is comparable to the standards of modern One-Day cricket.
A scheduled board meeting was cancelled by the Bangladesh Cricket Board this afternoon following the development. Senior board members, including President Faruque Ahmed, have gathered at the hospital.
Tamim’s retirement from International cricket was announced by him in January, just before Bangladesh’s squad for the Champions Trophy was unveiled by the BCB, leaving behind a legacy as one of Bangladesh’s finest cricketers scoring a remarkable 15,000+ runs across formats, with 8,357 coming in ODIs from 243 matches.
