A Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge passed the order banning Shakib al Hasan and 15 of his associates from travelling outside the country. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) sent two petitions to the court. Judge, Md Zakir Hossain, after reviewing those petitions, ordered to put up a ban.
The allegations against Shakib and his associates suggest that they invested crores in a stock through questionable means. It has been reported that the group violated multiple financial laws while investing more than 13 crores Tk.
The 38-year-old all-rounder has already retired from tests and T20Is. He last played for his national side in October 2024 in the test series against India. Bangladesh are set to play Sri Lanka for three ODIs; however, it is uncertain whether Shakib will be selected or not in the squad. He was not a part of the team that played in the Champions Trophy earlier this year.
The money embezzlement allegations stopping Shakib from travelling outside Bangladesh are not one-off. The great all-rounder also has a murder charge against him. He faces accusations of being involved in the murder of a factory worker.
The charges emerged during Bangladesh’s historic test series win in Pakistan in late 2024. He was allowed to travel with the team by the interim government. His last appearance for the national side came shortly after in India in a test series.
Earlier in 2025, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) had banned Shakib al Hasan from bowling in competitions affiliated with the ECB. The left-arm spinner’s bowling action was brought under the scanner, and it was believed that he bowled with an illegal action. However, he was later cleared to bowl with the same action. His action after further assessments was found to be correct.
While investigations are still ongoing against Shakib al Hasan regarding his involvement in the stock market scam, it is important to note that he is one of the richest cricketers in Bangladesh. The all-rounder has an estimated net worth of 800 crore BDT (Bangladeshi Taka).
He is unarguably the greatest cricketer from his nation. With 712 wickets in international cricket, Shakib is the highest wicket-taker for Bangladesh with a healthy margin. He features third on the list for most runs for the country across formats. His success in different formats of the game has allowed him to bag deals with PepsiCo and Boost.
Apart from his earnings from brand endorsements, Shakib has also earned a huge share of wealth from playing in leagues all around the world. In modern-day T20 cricket, the 38-year-old has been a multi-dimensional player. It has allowed him to be a top priority for teams.
