There have been many batters who have shown that they can score crucial runs for multiple matches in a row. Players like Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina and David Warner have been some of the most consistent batters for their teams. While the limelight is often taken by players with high strike rates it is the batters with high averages who are undervalued in a T20 setup.
Since his debut in international cricket to the present day, Devon Conway has been a revelation in T20 batting. With an average of 48.63, Conway ranks first on this list. The opening batter from New Zealand has been a great player for Chennai Super Kings in the limited time he has spent in the team. He has scored close to a thousand runs in the IPL despite playing only 23 matches. In IPL 2023, he scored 672 runs at an average of more than 51 and played a crucial role in CSK winning the title.
Sai Sudharsan has been one of the finds of IPL in the last three years. The Chennai-born batter has scored more than a thousand runs in the IPL. Sudharsan has an average of 47 in the IPL and with age on his side, the 22-year-old can improve his stats even more. He has been playing for the Gujarat Titans and has played some memorable innings for them including the knock of 96 runs in the IPL 2023 final against CSK.
KL Rahul has been often criticised for his playing style in the IPL. While the Indian batter has an average of 45.47 and ranks third on this list, he is still criticised for his low strike rate. It is his strike rate which has also resulted in his ousting from the national team. Rahul possesses a range of shots but plays defensively in the powerplay which can result in a low strike rate.
Hashim Amla has been one of the best batters from South Africa. The T20 format is possibly his weakest format. Amla has an average of 44.38 in the IPL despite playing the tournament for only two seasons. Despite scoring two centuries in his last season in IPL 2017, Amla never played a game in the following seasons. The South African opening batter played for Punjab Kings in 2016 and 2017. Thanks to his centuries, the Punjab Kings finished 5th on the points table and missed out on a playoff spot by two points.
The new captain of Chennai Super Kings, Ruturaj Gaikwad also makes this list. In his five seasons for the five-time champions, CSK, Gaikwad has scored 2380 runs at an average of 41.75. It is his consistency at the top of the order which has helped CSK add two more titles to their trophy cabinet. In both title-winning seasons, Gaikwad was among the top run-scorers. While the new skipper will have a lot to think about he will be less worried about his batting form and consistency. He is also on course to become a permanent fixture in the Indian team and has performed well in the limited chances he has had.
In the first season of the IPL, Luke Pomersbach playing for the Kings XI Punjab (Punjab Kings) had an absolute blast. Pomersbach scored 152 runs while being dismissed only once. He had an average of 152 in the season which is the most by any batter in a single season. The Australian batter had a great ability to attack the short-pitched deliveries. He was a young promising star but off-field issues marred his career which meant he was not seen in the IPL for a very long time.
