Axar Patel picked up the most catches in IPL 2024. The Indian all-rounder took 13 catches in 14 matches averaging almost a catch in every match. Patel took some of the best catches including off his own bowling. Dhruv Jurel took 11 catches in 2024. Jurel is a wicket-keeper but with Sanju Samson in the side, Jurel played mostly as a fielder. He is ranked second on this list thanks to his safe hands and speed while fielding in deep positions. The IPL 2024 winning skipper, Shreyas Iyer is ranked third. Iyer took 10 catches and was a perfect support to his bowling department as a skipper as well as a fielder. The KKR skipper has been a great fielder in the last few years with his catching as well as ground fielding. Daryl Mitchell with nine catches took the most catches in IPL 2024 for an overseas player. Mitchell also took the most catches in an innings in IPL 2024. Tilak Varma and Abdul Samad also took nine catches for their sides.
Virat Kohli has been a great fielder for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The former skipper has already topped the run charts in the IPL and is topping the fielding charts as well with his catching. Kohli has taken 114 catches in 252 matches. He generally fields in the slips cordon when the ball is swinging. Some of the great fast bowlers in IPL have played for RCB like Dale Steyn, Mohammed Siraj and Mitchell Starc among others. These fast bowlers have helped Kohli by troubling the batters with swinging and seaming deliveries. Once the swing of the ball is gone, Kohli fields at cover and mid-wicket. These are the positions where the ball mostly goes. In death overs, he fields in deep positions like long-on, long-off, and deep mid-wicket. He generally fields in positions where the ball goes the most and is someone who likes to be involved in the match.
Suresh Raina was one of the best fielders of his generation. He along with a few others brought a revolution in the Indian team in terms of fielding. Raina ranks second for taking the most catches in IPL. Mr. IPL as he is fondly known took 109 catches in his career. Like Kohli, Raina too fields in positions where the ball mostly goes. He is possibly the best fielder to have played in the IPL. Raina has taken some of the most memorable catches in the league’s history. One of his best catches came for Gujarat Lions at slips when he took a one-handed stunner at slips.
Kieron Pollard has taken the most catches in the IPL as an overseas. The West Indian all-rounder is one of the most loved overseas cricketers in India. He has taken 103 catches in 189 matches. Pollard took most catches that others would not be able to reach. This was only possible thanks to his height. His height allowed him to reach to reach extreme heights while standing at long-off and long-on. With the amount of T20 cricket, he played all around the world he developed great skills in fielding as well. He could very well judge where he was standing when fielding in the deep. He also had the ability to complete a juggling catch.
The best Indian fielder in present times, Ravindra Jadeja is joint-third with Kieron Pollard. Jadeja has taken 103 catches in his great fielding career at the IPL. His speed is something that sets him apart from everyone on this list. The way he is still able to dive to complete catches at his age shows signs that he is not going to stop any time soon. In the next season, he will look to overtake Pollard and Raina. He still has a lot to do to catch Kohli but with his skills, it is something that will be possible. If he manages to play a season or two more than Kohli he will certainly fancy his chances to overtake him.
Five-time IPL winning skipper, Rohit Sharma makes it into the list for taking the most catches in IPL. Sharma has taken 101 catches in his career. While he does not possess the same athletic skills as the players above him have, he has been a great fielder. Sharma is often a safe pair of hands in the slips as well as in most positions inside the 30-yard circle. With Pollard and Raina retired, Rohit would look to overtake them and cement his spot in the top three with Kohli and Jadeja.
MS Dhoni is the finest wicketkeeper who has played in the IPL. The former Chennai Super Kings’ skipper has taken 148 catches. In spite of aging season after season, one thing that has not changed is Dhoni’s form behind the wickets. While keeping up with the spinners, Dhoni has been the best thanks to his ultra-quick reaction time. He sits at the top comfortably and will most likely be there for a very long time.
Dinesh Karthik is only the second player after MS Dhoni to take more than 100 catches. Karthik has taken 137 catches in the IPL. He has been a great keeper in the IPL and has been able to take some great catches thanks to the length of his dives. Karthik played his last season in the IPL in 2024. He retires at the second spot on this list and will be able to hold this position for a long time.
Wriddhiman Saha with 87 catches to his name has taken the third-most catches in the IPL as a keeper. While Saha might play a season more, he has an uphill task if he wishes to overtake Karthik who leads him by 50 catches.
Rishabh Pant makes it into the list despite being much younger than others who are on this list. The southpaw has taken 72 catches while being stationed behind the stumps. Pant has been a great keeper and on top of that he has had a great arsenal of bowling who have been able to induce edges from opposition batters.
