Mark Steketee and Nathan McAndrew were the only bowlers to pick a five-wicket haul in BBL 2024/25. The two fast bowlers in spite of not having a lot of overs between them were pretty successful. Steketee in particular had a strike rate of 7.8 and proved to be a hero for the Melbourne Stars who qualified for the playoffs after losing their first five games.
Andrew Tye is tied with multiple players for picking up a five-wicket haul in the BBL. The fast bowler is one of the most successful bowlers in the tournament. Tye holds the record for picking up the most four-wicket hauls in the BBL. The right-arm pacer has picked 156 wickets in 112 matches in the marquee league. He has played an important role in the Perth Scorchers’ four out of the five title wins. Tye is one of those bowlers who has a knack for picking wickets in a cluster. That is the reason behind his two hat-tricks in the BBL in 2017 and a hat-trick on debut in the IPL in the same year.
In the BBL, his only five-wicket haul came in 2017/18. Bowling for the Scorchers in the second innings, Tye and the rest of the bowlers had the difficult task of defending a target of 143 runs. However, a fifer from the right-arm pacer allowed the five-time champions to steal a victory from the Melbourne Stars. Peter Handscomb, Luke Wright, and Marcus Stoinis were victims of Tye’s ruthless bowling.
Sean Abbott has picked up one five-wicket haul in the BBL. The right-arm pacer holds multiple bowling records in the tournament. Abbott has taken the most wickets with 175 scalps to his name. He has been the most efficient bowler in the league and boasts a strike rate of 14.29. He has the best strike rate among bowlers with at least 50 wickets. Abbott’s economy of 8.46 runs per over might look high in isolation. However, as he bowls most of his overs during the death or the power surge, one can understand the reason behind him being expensive.
His only five-wicket haul came in the 2016/17 season against the Adelaide Strikers. Bowling in the first innings, the leading wicket-taker put on a splendid performance picking up a fifer. His dismissals included Ben Dunk, Brad Hodge, and Travis Head. Strikers were restricted to a total of 152 runs. Unfortunately for Abbott though, the Sixers went on to lose the match by 48 runs. The pacer was rewarded for his performance by being named the Player of the Match.
Dan Christian has the 3rd most five wicket hauls in the BBL. The Australian all-rounder has picked up two fifers in the tournament. The T20 specialist retired from the Big Bash League with one of the most impressive resumes. Christian has been part of the trophy-winning teams thrice in his career. He has won three titles with Brisbane Heat (2012/13), Melbourne Renegades (2018/19), and Sydney Sixers (2020/21). In 12 seasons in the league, Christian has taken 10 or more wickets four times and three of them have ended with a trophy in his hand.
His first fifer came in BBL 2012/13 for the Heat against Sydney Thunder which helped his team win by five wickets. His second five-wicket haul in the tournament was for the Hobart Hurricanes. In 2016/17, Christian produced his best bowling figures of 5/14 to restrict Adelaide Strikers to 143 and eventually help his team win by eight wickets.
Peter Siddle has the 2nd most five-wicket hauls in the BBL. The experienced fast bowler has taken two fifers in the tournament. The Victoria-born bowler is an incredible fast-bowling workhorse. He has the ability to bowl fast deliveries in elongated spells. He is mostly remembered for his incredible hat-trick at the Gabba in the Ashes on his 26th birthday. He has been an important player in the Australian test team and played a key role in their 5-0 Ashes win in 2013/14. In the BBL, Siddle is one of the most experienced players and he is playing his last season of competitive cricket in BBL 2024/25. Playing his last season, Siddle would like to end it with a last hoorah. If he manages another fifer he could be on the top of the list for a short while at least.
His first five-wicket haul in the tournament came in BBL 2020/21. He recorded his best bowling figures of 5/16 playing for the Adelaide Strikers. His bowling performance helped the Strikers to defeat Hobart Hurricanes by five wickets. He became the first bowler in the history of the BBL to take five-wicket hauls in consecutive seasons in 2021/22. Siddle picked up five wickets for 23 runs once again it was against the Hurricanes. Ben McDermott and Tim David were the prized scalps of Siddle who helped the Strikers to win by seven wickets.
Ben Dwarshuis has the most five-wicket hauls in the BBL. The 30-year-old pacer has picked up two fifers in the competition. Dwarshuis unlike Christian and Siddle has age on his side. He has taken 148 wickets in 117 matches in the tournament. Playing for the Sydney Sixers, Dwarshuis has been a vital player in two of their three trophy-winning seasons. When the Sixers won the trophy back-to-back, the left-arm pacer picked up 40 wickets in two seasons. What made him a dangerous bowler in the league was his ability to wickets in quick succession. His strike rate during this period was less than 15 balls per wicket.
Dwarshuis’ first five-wicket haul in the tournament came in 2021/22. The pacer for the Sixers came in clutch while defending a score of 150 runs against the Melbourne Renegades. He picked up figures of 5/26 as the three-time champions won the match by 45 runs. His second five-wicket haul came in the Qualifier in BBL 2023/24. Sixers were defending a target of 153 runs against Brisbane Heat when he recorded his best figures of 5/21. His bowling performance was enough to win the match by 39 runs and qualify for the finals.
