The IPL 2024 saw batters go crazy and break many records. This meant that there was very little a bowler could do in the season. There were only three bowlers who picked up a five-wicket haul. Jasprit Bumrah, Sandeep Sharma and Yash Thakur were the three bowlers who managed to pick a fifer. Yash Thakur from LSG was the first bowler to pick a fifer in IPL 2024. He achieved the feat against the Gujarat Titans. Unfortunately for Thakur, he did not have a great rest of the season as he picked only six more wickets. Bumrah was the second bowler to pick a five-wicket haul in IPL 2024. He achieved the feat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Bumrah was the highest wicket-taker among these three. Sandeep was the last one to pick a five-wicket haul in IPL 2024. The RR bowler achieved the feat against Mumbai Indians.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar is one of the four bowlers who have the most five-wicket hauls in IPL. The right-arm pacer has been a regular performer in the league for more than a decade. Kumar has two five-wicket hauls to his name. In spite of not having express pace, Kumar has troubled many top-order batters from India and overseas. His ability to generate swing in the air has been a tool for his success in IPL. In death overs, he relies upon off-cutters and wide yorkers which make the batters hit false shots. His economy of 7.56 RPO shows that he does not only take wickets for his side but can also restrict the flow of runs against the best finishers. His best figures of 5/19 came in a win against Punjab Kings in 2017 at Hyderabad.
Jasprit Bumrah is the best bowler India has been able to find in recent years thanks to the IPL. He has picked two fifers which is the most in IPL. Bumrah with his unconventional action has troubled batters from his debut. His first wicket in the IPL was a memorable one of Virat Kohli. Bumrah can be often unplayable for batters in different phases of the match. He has the ability to not only control the run flow but take wickets. Often there have been times when Bumrah has dismissed batters who are looking to defend his deliveries. Just like Bhuvneshwar, Bumrah also has a lot of tricks in his bag. While he might not generate the same amount of swing Bhuvi does, however, he makes it up with his extra pace. Bumrah’s best figures of 5/10 came against Kolkata Knight Riders in a losing cause in 2022.
While Jaydev Unadkat does not have a similar amount of wickets as Bumrah or Bhuvi, he still jointly holds the record for taking the most five-wicket hauls in IPL. The left-arm fast bowler has two fifers in the IPL. While his high economy of 8.97 RPO might suggest that he was not as effective as others, his accuracy would suggest otherwise. Unadkat mostly bowled the death overs which meant his economy took a hit. However, when on song, Unadkat could pose to be a serious threat to opposition batters. His cutters and off-pace deliveries in death did not allow batters to slog him every time. He has 99 wickets to his name in IPL and best figures of 5/25. His best figures came in a win against Delhi Daredevils in 2013 in Bangalore.
James Faulkner is the last person on the list for picking up the most five-wicket hauls in IPL. The Australian fast bowler is the only overseas bowler to make it into the list. Faulkner in the limited matches was part of many memorable clashes. He might be remembered by most IPL fans as the bowler who was hit for a six by Aditya Tare in the high-octane clash between MI and RR in 2014 which knocked RR out of IPL playoffs. But a year prior to that, Faulkner recorded his best IPL figures against SRH. The fast bowler picked up 5 wickets while giving away 16 runs in a losing cause.
