The England team has performed quite well overall in their last 5 Test matches. They defeated India convincingly in the first two Tests, where their top-order was in blazing form and the bowling was sharp too. They lost the third match, but showed their mettle again in the fourth Test and achieved a big win. The fifth match was a draw, but that too was won on their terms, where they dominated in the first innings and controlled the match. Batsmen like Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Zak Crawley have scored consistently, and in the bowling unit Archer, Woakes and Anderson have bowled some impactful spells together. England's approach is quite attacking, and their "Buzzball" mindset gives them an edge - they play to win matches, not to pass time and draw. The overall team momentum is with them and their intent is clear: to make the series their own.
India's recent Test form has been a bit mixed, or should I say a bit disappointing too. In the last 5 matches, they have won only one – the third Test – where they finally put England under pressure. But in the remaining 3 matches, they lost twice and one match was drawn (that too was narrowly saved). The fourth Test was their biggest test where their top-order completely collapsed (0/2), but solid centuries from Gill, Jadeja and Washington Sundar brought them back in the match and got the match drawn.
Shubman Gill has done wonders in this series not only with captaincy but also in batting – with twin centuries. In bowling, Jadeja and Bumrah bowled well but did not get consistent support. India's struggle is to take early breakthroughs and break partnerships. If they want to win the 5th Test, they will have to come with a mindset of winning every session, because England is not going to take it lightly now.
The pitch of Kennington Oval is balanced. Both bat and ball get help here. In the beginning of the match, fast bowlers get bounce and a little seam movement. The new ball makes the ball faster. If there are changes in the sky, there is even more swing. But batsmen who save the new ball find it easier to score runs. The outfield is fast, so the ball reaches the boundary quickly. The average score of the first innings here is around 340.
As the match progresses, the pitch becomes dry and starts breaking. Then spin bowlers come into the game. On day 4 and 5 spinners get a turn. And batting becomes a bit difficult in the fourth innings. After winning the toss, the team often prefers to bat first. But if the weather is cloudy, then bowling first is also okay. So the Oval pitch is helpful for fast bowlers in the beginning and for spinners in the end. The batsman has to play with a little understanding.
It has been a long journey of Test cricket between England and India, in which both the teams have faced each other in 138 matches. England has a slight edge in this old rivalry, they have won 53 matches while India has won 35 matches. The remaining 50 matches have ended in a draw, which shows that many times both the teams have failed to challenge each other. These numbers tell that England has a slight historical dominance, especially in home conditions, but India has also been quite competitive against them in recent years.
The last time the two clashed was in the 4th Test of 2025 at Manchester, where the match was drawn - but the match was full of drama and intensity. England batted first and made a mammoth score of 669, to which India replied with scores of 358 in the first innings and 425/4 in the second innings. The centuries of Gill, Sundar and Jadeja saved the match for India, while England pushed in every way to win. This contest between the two teams once again shows that even though the overall record may be in England's favour, as of today both sides are very closely matched.
