Purani Dilli 6 had a very disappointing start to the tournament. They suffered a massive 82-run defeat at the hands of Outer Delhi Warriors in their very first match. The team's batting line-up failed completely - the entire team was all-out for just 66 runs. Only Lalit Yadav (20) and Samarth Seth (18) were able to show some fight. The team conceded 148 runs in the first over as well, but Udhav Mohan bowled a strong spell taking 5 wickets. But the other bowlers did not make much impact.
If recent form is to be seen, in their last 5 matches, they have won 2 matches, lost 2 matches and abandoned one match. But the current momentum is against them as their latest performance was a confidence bummer. They will need to bring discipline and depth in batting and maintain constant pressure in bowling as well if they want to move ahead. They will need to show improvement in every department against West Delhi Lions.
West Delhi Lions campaign is going on very well. The team has won both its recent matches and looks in form. In the last match, they chased the target of 186 in just 15.4 overs. Ankit Kumar played a destructive innings of 96 runs (46 balls) and along with him Krish Yadav also scored 67 runs. Both together made an opening partnership of 158 runs which was the turning point of the match.
The bowling side was also solid where Anirudh Chowdhary took 3 wickets and Manan Bhardwaj took 2 wickets to control the match. Overall team balance looks quite strong – their execution was correct everywhere in opening, middle-order and death overs. The momentum is in their favour and if they play with this intensity, then it can be quite a tough challenge for Purani Delhi 6.
Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, formerly known as Feroz Shah Kotla, is known for its batting-friendly nature in T20 matches. The pitch here usually stays true and gets better for batting as the match progresses. Short square and straight boundaries (around 65 to 68 meters) make big hitting easier, helping batters dominate, especially in the second innings. In recent seasons, high scores have been common here, with the average first innings score during IPL 2024 crossing 235. The highest ever T20 score on this ground is 278 runs, showing how much batters can enjoy this surface.
However, bowlers – especially spinners – are not completely out of the game. While pacers get some early help with the new ball, spinners, particularly leg-spinners, have done well in the middle overs. The venue has shown a trend of favoring teams chasing, although in IPL 2024, teams batting first had more success. Overall, the pitch offers a good contest with an edge to the batters, but bowlers who bowl smartly can still make an impact.
Purani Dilli 6's record against West Delhi Lions has been much better so far. So far 2 matches have been played between the two teams and Purani Dilli 6 has won both the times. In the first match they won by 6 wickets while chasing a target of 140, where they finished the match in 18.1 overs. The bowling unit also performed well in that match as WDL team was all-out for just 139 runs. In the second match too Purani Dilli 6 gave a strong performance and won by 7 wickets. West Delhi Lions made 141 runs in 20 overs but PD6 chased the target in just 17.1 overs. Their batting and bowling showed quite balance in both the matches. Now when these teams are going to face each other once again, the old Delhi 6 will come out with a psychological edge but considering the current form of WDL, this contest is going to be quite interesting.
