Mumbai Indians became the fourth team to reach the playoffs. The five-time champions, thanks to a great bowling effort, defended a score of 180 runs. The target could have been much lower for the Capitals had the last two overs of the first innings not resulted in 48 runs.
However, it still would have been pretty tough for the visitors to chase down that total on a tricky surface against a bowling lineup of such quality. Mitchell Santner was the star performer. The Kiwi spinner picked up three wickets in his four overs while giving away only 11 runs. He completely killed off the chase with his superb controlled bowling. Jasprit Bumrah too was among the wickets and bowled a pretty economical spell.
Delhi Capitals score 105/7 in 15 overs. Need 76 runs in 30 balls. Madhav: 1* (2), Chameera: 1* (1)
Mitchell Santner has produced a masterclass of spin bowling. While the pitch at Wankhede Stadium is assisting the tweakers, the Kiwi spinner has used the change of pace in a great manner. Rizvi, who had faced 30 deliveries, was totally outfoxed by the spinner. He bowled a delivery at close to 96 kmph; the following delivery was only 77 kmph, which resulted in a scalp. In the same over, he produced another jaffa of a delivery and dismissed Ashutosh Sharma, who charged down the pitch but could not get back into the crease. Ryan Rickelton, with the gloves in hand, did the rest of the job to complete the dismissal. He bowled out his spell, taking three wickets while giving away only 11 runs.

In the 11th over, the Mumbai Indians had a great chance to take another wicket. However, Will Jacks misjudged a catch and ran a few steps forward. It turned out that had he remained in his original position, that catch could have been taken at a comfortable height. The over turned from bad to worse as 16 runs were scored off six deliveries from Karn Sharma.
Mitchell Santner, in the following over, once again strung together a few dot balls. The left-arm spinner gave away only a couple of runs in the over.

Bumrah trapped the South African batter in front of the stumps with a delivery that tailed back into the right-handed batter.

The asking rate for the Capitals has climbed up to more than 10 runs per over. The two overs right after the power play from Jasprit Bumrah and Santner have practically cost nothing. Only six runs have been scored off the 12 balls from them.

Delhi Capitals score 14/1 in 2 overs. Need 169 runs in 18 overs. Rahul: 6* (3), Porel: 2* (2)
Deepak Chahar, bowling the second over, got the first breakthrough for the hosts. The right-arm seamer bowled a slower delivery, which Faf du Plessis attempted to smack over the long-on boundary. It was an unusual night at the Wankhede Stadium with the pitch offering turn and grip for the spinners. The batters could not hit across the line like they are accustomed to at the venue. Suryakumar Yadav, for the 13th time in the season, registered a 25+ score and equalled Temba Bavuma for the record in T20s. He once again top-scored for the hosts but struggled a lot initially and still ended up with a strike rate of 169.8. It was Naman Dhir who provided a great finish to the first innings.
