Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings along with the Mumbai Indians is the most successful team in the Indian Premier League. The CSK franchise is owned by one of the most powerful men in the sport of cricket. Narayanaswami Srinivasan owns the five-time IPL champions. Srinivasan was formerly the Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and also served as President of the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India). He was the BCCI President for two years before spending three years as the Secretary in office.

Chennai Super Kings have won the coveted IPL trophy five times in his career. They also won the Champions League T20 competition twice before it was discontinued. The Super Kings franchise is also present in SA20 and MLC. However, they have not enjoyed the same level of success in the two leagues and are yet to win the title.

Delhi Capitals

Unlike many other IPL team owners, Delhi Capitals is managed and owned by business groups, GMR Group and JSW Sports. The Capitals are mostly run by Parth Jindal of JSW Cement and JSW Paints. He is the Managing Director of JSW Cement. Jindal attends most of the IPL games and is also present at different sporting events where the athletes are being sponsored by JSW.

Delhi Capitals in the IPL have failed to make a mark in spite of being one of the teams to have played in all of the 17 seasons of the marquee tournament. Their best finish in the league has been when they finished runners-up in 2020. Apart from their IPL team, the Capitals also have teams in the WPL, SA20, and ILT20. In the WPL and SA20, their best finish again has been being the runners-up. However, in ILT20 they recently became the champions in the 2025 season.

Gujarat Titans

Gujarat Titans is one of the two latest entrants in the IPL. The team is owned and managed by the CVC Capitals. In spite of having played only three seasons in the IPL, the Titans have impressed many with their consistent performances. In their first season in 2022, they won the title with Hardik Panyda at the helm. In their next season, the then-defending champions once again reached the finals, however, ended up being the runners-up. They are the only franchise in the tournament to not have a team in any other T20 league.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders with three IPL titles to their name is one of the most successful teams in the tournament. KKR has a pretty famous IPL team owner list which includes the highly loved, Bollywood actor, Shah Rukh Khan. Apart from SRK, the list of owners also includes actress, Juhi Chawla, and he husband, Jay Mehta. The team is owned by Red Chillies Entertainment and the Mehta Group.

The Knight Riders are well known among T20 leagues around the world and have four more teams apart from their parent team in the IPL. Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) are the most successful units of the Knight Riders. They have won the CPL  four times and the WCPL once. In MLC and ILT20, their teams have had disappointing performances and are yet to win a title.

Lucknow Super giants

Lucknow Super giants along with Gujarat Titans were the latest entrants to the highly lucrative league. However, their IPL team owners, Dr. Sanjiv Goenka had already dipped his toe in the IPL. He owned the now-defunct, Rising Pune Supergiants in 2016 and 2017. Like GT, LSG too has enjoyed some success in their limited time in the IPL. While they have not won a title, but have reached the playoffs twice.

Apart from the IPL, the Supergiants also own a team in SA20, Durban Supergiants. Like LSG, DSG too has struggled to make an impact in SA20. They reached the finals in 2024 but in the other two seasons recorded bottom-two finishes.

MI, like their arch-rivals, Chennai Super Kings has won the IPL title five times and the Champions League T20 twice.

Apart from the IPL, the MI franchise has teams in the WPL, SA20, MLC, and ILT20. Their success has transcended beyond India. Their four teams have won a title each in all leagues they have a team in.

Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings is one of the eight original teams of the Indian Premier League. However, in spite of spending 17 seasons in the tournament, the Kings have only reached the final once. The team is owned by popular Bollywood actress, Preity Zinta along with businessmen, Ness Wadia, Mohit Burman, and Karan Paul. The four co-owners have multiple businesses. These people are tycoons in their respective fields.

The Royals are owned by Manoj Badale who is a co-founder and Managing Partner of Blenheim Chalcot. Blenheim Chalcot is a tech venture powered by artificial intelligence. The Royals won the coveted title once in 2008. However, since then have failed to add another title to their tally having reached the final only once more.

They also own teams in SA20, CPL, and WCPL. In both Men’s and Women’s competitions in the Caribbean their team, Barbados Royals have won the trophy twice each. In SA20, Paarl Royals’ best finish came in the first season when they qualified for the playoffs.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru

Loading table...

Royal Challengers Bengaluru like Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals have failed to win an IPL title in spite of playing all of 17 seasons. RCB and the IPL team owners is a controversial relationship. They were previously Vijay Mallya, chairman of Kingfisher Airlines. Mallya was accused in a money laundering loan default case of 1 billion dollars. RCB is now owned by United Spirits who are also in the same line of business that Kingfisher was.

The changing of hands of ownership did not bring a change in luck for RCB as they are yet to win an IPL trophy much to the despise of their fans. However, the women’s team has already done what the men's team could not. Led by Smriti Mandhan RCB won the WPL title in 2024.

Sunrisers Hyderabad was not one of the original eight teams in the IPL. However, the Orange Army has featured in 12 seasons in the competition. SRH is owned by Kalanithi Maran who is the Chairman and Founder of Sun Group. The Sun Group has a valuation of close to ₹300 billion. The franchise won an IPL title in 2016 with David Warner at the helm of the side. Since then they have reached the final of the tournament twice in 2018 and 2024.

Apart from their IPL team, the Sunrisers also own a T20 team in SA20. In the league, Sunrisers Eastern Cape has unarguably been the most successful team. They won the title twice in the first two seasons and even reached the final in the third season.
