In an interview with IndiaToday, Devajit Saikia assured, “We are taking every aspect of risk very seriously to avoid any future mishaps.” After the exclusive Apex meeting, the BCCI members have issued new rules and protocols that must be followed by every IPL franchise.
Here are the new BCCI guidelines for IPL title celebrations following the Bengaluru tragic incident:
Teams must hold the celebrations for at least 3-4 days after necessary permissions are secured by the franchise.
The team must have prior BCCI approval before announcing or hosting any public parade or celebrations.
The franchise must ensure the 4-5 tier security protocols, including at celebration venues and along the travel routes of players and staff-from the airport to the final destination.
The team must get the clearances from local police, district authorities, and state governments before confirming any public event.
Without approval from any governing body, the team is not allowed to organise any public events.
On June 4th, the IPL celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru became sour when an unfortunate event took place. Near the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, thousands of people gathered to celebrate the iconic victory of Royal Challengers Bengaluru over Punjab Kings, but soon celebrations turned into grief when 11 people lost their lives and more than 30 people were injured during a stampede, due to poor security management. According to the sources, the Bengaluru Traffic Police refused the celebratory IPL parade, which had already been announced by the RCB franchise publicly and later cancelled. But before its cancellation over 2 Lakhs people amassed near the M Chinnaswamy to see the IPL parade, which exceeded the capacity and became the cause of the disaster.
The BCCI, which tried to escape liability, is now coming into action and has released a new set of security guidelines ahead of any IPL victory parade in the future. The committee set up a three-member meeting - BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, with vice-president Rajeev Shukla, and treasurer Prabhtej Singh Bhatia, to formulate the new protocols ahead of the IPL Trophy celebrations.
The Indian cricket coach Gautam Gambhir also spoke regarding the matter and forbid such kind of events in the future. He said, “I think the lives of people are far more important and I will continue to say. We can be a little bit careful of not holding these kinds of roadshows and can probably have them closed doors or something like this in a stadium." The loss of lives resulted in there being discussions over RCB facing a ban from the IPL.
Clearly the event right after the IPL 2025 Final was poorly managed and organised which caused the disastrous event resulting in RCB officials getting arrested. To prevent such terrible incidents, Saikia stated that the BCCI will no longer tolerate any poorly managed events in the future.
