Akash Madhwal was named the player of the match for his incredible bowling performance. The right-arm pacer picked up three wickets in the first innings. He made a huge difference in the clash with his controlled bowling in the death overs. He was spot on with his yorkers and used the conditions pretty well. The CSK batters, barring his first over, found it pretty tough to face him and score runs off him.
Akash Madhwal’s night with the ball in hand started on the worst note possible. The right-arm pacer, due to a fumble by wicketkeeper Sanju Samson, gave away five runs off wides. He went for 14 runs in his first over, but it was his bowling that restricted CSK to a score of 187 runs. Madhwal gave away only 15 runs in his next three overs as he nailed his yorkers in the death overs. He picked up three wickets as well. Dewald Brevis was his first scalp before he dismissed Shivam Dube and MS Dhoni in the final over of the first innings.
Yudhvir Singh, in spite of being expensive in his spell, was the best bowler for the Rajasthan Royals. The right-arm pacer picked up three wickets in his first three overs while going for 35 runs. In his very first over, the pacer from Jammu and Kashmir dismissed Devon Conway and Urvil Patel. He went for a few runs in his second over, before picking up Ravindra Jadeja in his third over. Even though he picked up three wickets in his spell, giving away 47 runs means that it was a mixed performance from the pacer.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi scored a half-century, which was pretty unusual given the knocks that he has played so far in the season. The 15-year-old took his time to settle into the innings as he was mostly on the non-striker's end in the initial overs of the game. Once he got his eye in, there was no stopping the young batter. He smashed four fours and sixes each in his knock of 57 runs off 33 deliveries.
Ayush Mhatre carried on with his fine form and gave the thousands of CSK fans present at the Arun Jaitley Stadium a lot to cheer about. Even after witnessing the loss of a couple of wickets, the young batter continued with his attacking approach. He was dealing with boundaries to score his runs. He was dismissed by former CSK man Tushar Deshpande after scoring 43 runs. In his 20-ball knock, he struck eight fours and a six.
Once again in the season, Chennai Super Kings lost a couple of wickets early in their innings. Yudhvir Singh, in his first over, struck twice to send Devon Conway and Urvil Patel back into the pavilion in the second over.
Ayush Mhatre was looking to take the game away from the Royals with his blistering knock. The right-handed batter was going all guns blazing at a strike rate of more than 200. He scored 43 runs before he was dismissed by Tushar Deshpande in the final over of the power play.
Yudhvir came back into the attack and picked up another wicket with Ravindra Jadeja being dismissed for a low score. Dewald Brevis once again carried on with his fine form as he scored 42 runs in only 25 balls. However, a period of 13 balls without any boundary saw Brevis going for a glory hit and losing his off stump.
Shivam Dube, along with MS Dhoni, could not provide a great finish to the first innings as CSK managed a score of 187 runs. At one stage of the first innings, CSK had scored 170 runs at the end of the 17 overs, but still ended up scoring only 17 runs in the last three overs.
Akash Madhwal turned out to be the difference between a chaseable target and a daunting score. The right-arm pacer bowling the death overs nailed his yorkers more often than not and picked up Dube and Dhoni’s wickets in the last over as well.
For the umpteenth time in the season, it seemed like the Rajasthan Royals, in spite of a great start, would falter in their chase. It was Yashasvi Jaiswal who provided the fireworks in the power play. The left-handed batter scored 36 runs in only 19 balls before being dismissed in the fourth over by Anshul Kamboj.
Jaiswal’s opening partner, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, was a mere spectator for the initial stage of the innings. The young left-handed batter faced only seven deliveries in the power play, with Sanju Samson facing the majority of the ball at the start of the partnership.
Once Suryavanshi got his eye in, he was back to his best and smashed the CSK bowlers to different parts of the ground. He top-scored across the two teams and scored 57 runs in only 33 balls, hitting four fours and four sixes.
Ravichandran Ashwin had seemed to turn the game on its head with his two-wicket over. The veteran off-spinner dismissed both Samson and Suryavanshi and put the RR middle order to the test once again.
The Royals’ two retentions, Dhruv Jurel and Shimron Hetmyer, were heavily criticised for their knocks in the chases where they went on to lose the clash. Jurel played a great knock of 31 runs off 12 deliveries to seal the win. Hetmyer too scored 12 runs, hitting a four and a six.
