The three time champions of the Indian Premier League and the Purple Army were also the defending champions of this 18th edition of the TATA IPL 2025. But now, sadly, Kolkata Knight Riders will not be able to defend their IPL crown in this season because they have been eliminated from this edition. The match between RCB and KKR was a washout in M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru due to persistent rains.
Due to that washout, KKR’s chances of qualifying were also done and dusted and that is also the one reason why the Kolkata Knight Franchise showed their displeasure on the rule made by the BCCI in the mid season of the IPL’s 18th edition. KKR’s CEO, Venky Mysore BCCI should be more consistent in applying these rule changes in the middle of an IPL edition. Mysore said that if this rule was been implemented in the game between Bengaluru and Kolkata, then that match would not have ended in a wash out.
On Saturday, 17th May 2025, the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League was restarted after Indian Army’s triumph against Pakistan. The first match of the TATA IPL 2025 was played between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. While the first match after the resumption was also played between these two teams. RCB won the IPL 2025 opener. But the restarted match between these two same teams was ended in a washout.
The KKR’s CEO said that the washout would have been avoided. A five over match would been easily played in that scenario. He also noted that the game between the Challengers and the Knight Riders would been a risk because the forecast had predicted rains in Bengaluru that day. However, if the extra time would have been provided then, there was a chance of a five over match and washout would have been avoided.
After the washout, KKR wasn’t able make it to the top four of this year’s TATA IPL 2025 and because of that Venky said that making such inconsistent decisions in a tournament like the Indian Premier League is not appropriate. Due to such rules, now the team of Kolkata Knight Riders stand with the other teams like CSK, RR, SRH, and LSG, who haven’t reached the top four spot in this edition of the TATA IPL 2025.
According to the new rule in the Indian Premier League, which has been taken place since yesterday, the match can even start at 9.30 PM Indian Standard Time (IST) and the overs would not cut short. But the earlier rules said that even if the match had an 8.30 start because of the delay, then the overs would have reduced. Now the Purple Army will play their final match of the season of the TATA IPL 2025 against the Orange Army, Sunrisers Hyderabad at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Sunday, 25th May 2025.
