Hardik stated that India is also led by Suryakumar Yadav, and for the Mumbai Indians’ opening match, the captaincy will be taken over by him. He further added that he considers himself fortunate to have three captains playing alongside him-Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah. He mentioned that support is always provided by them, as they stand by him and offer guidance whenever needed.
However, Bumrah’s return to the MI squad remains uncertain as he is still recovering from a back injury. His current stay at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) was confirmed by Mahela Jayawardene.
The coach stated that Bumrah’s condition is being monitored, and feedback from NCA is awaited. He mentioned that Bumrah is in good spirits, and hopefully, his return to the team will happen soon. Jayawardene also emphasized that while his absence poses a challenge, it provides an opportunity for another player to step up and showcase their talent.
A query was raised about whether Hardik supports a rule change preventing previous season infractions from impacting subsequent tournaments. "I have no authority over this," the MI skipper commented. The incident last year was simply a part of cricket; unfortunately, the final overran one and a half to two minutes longer than allowed. I did not know the disciplinary action that would follow. Though disappointing, these are the established guidelines, and I have to respect them. "The final call on this regulation’s extension will be made by the league’s decision-makers.
Securing a win in the first game of the season has been a challenge for MI since 2012, and without Hardik and Bumrah, the task becomes tougher. There’s a big challenge awaiting us," the MI coach acknowledged.
It is anticipated that Bumrah will integrate with the Mumbai squad in the first week of April and might undergo further rehabilitation with the team. Pandya expressed gratitude, stating that he considers himself fortunate to have three captains—Rohit, Surya, and Bumrah—supporting him. He mentioned that they always offer encouragement and are available whenever assistance is required.
