WV Raman Criticizes Gautam Gambhir’s Lack of Clarity on Indian Squad Selection

Context behind the WV Raman criticism on Gambhir and Team India’s recent performance

The context of Raman’s criticism stems from India’s recent tour of England, the ongoing 5 Test match series, and the player selection. Currently, Team India is behind two games with one triumph at the Edgbaston. 

In the 15-member squad of India, Arshdeep Singh and Abhimanyu Easwaran are both waiting for their Test debut. Both players have shown their talent in International and Domestic cricket, where Arshdeep Singh was an integral part of the Indian team that won the 2024 T20 World Cup, and got a maiden Test call-up in May. On the other hand, Easwaran is a consistent player in the Ranji Trophy and Indian Domestic Cricket plays for Bengal. He earned his maiden call-up in 2022 during the Tour of Bangladesh.   

Raman’s critique of Gambhir appears rooted in his belief that players perform best when their roles are well-defined, especially in high-pressure international cricket. Raman’s comments suggest that some players in the current Indian squad may be uncertain about their positions or roles, potentially affecting their performance. 

This lack of clarity could be particularly detrimental during a transitional phase, with senior players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja nearing the retirement phase of their careers.

Gautam Gambhir, a former Indian cricket legend, was appointed as the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team in July 2024, due to his success as a mentor with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), guiding them to the IPL 2024 title. However, his lack of experience as a head coach is often scrutinized by cricket analytics, particularly in light of India’s inconsistent performances in recent matches. 

The BCCI’s decision to implement new guidelines, such as limiting family time during tours to maintain focus, has also sparked debates, with Gambhir supporting the rule and players like Kohli expressing reservations. This policy shift, combined with reported dressing room tensions, may have contributed to the uncertainty Raman alludes to.  

Who is WV Raman? 

WV Raman, who coached the Indian women’s team from 2018 to 2021 and led them to the T20 World Cup final in 2020, is known for his meticulous approach and emphasis on player development. 

His coaching stints with Tamil Nadu, Bengal, and KKR, along with his work at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), have earned him a reputation for nurturing young talent and providing clear guidance. 

As India aims to rebuild and prepare for future ICC events, including the 2025-27 WTC cycle, resolving internal uncertainties will be a must.
