Jason Behrendorff took the most wickets in the BBL 2024/25. The left-arm fast bowler picked up 17 wickets in the season while playing for the Perth Scorchers. While the Scorchers finished fifth on the points table, Behrendorff was one of the consistent performers for the five-time champions.
Tom Rogers and Riley Meredith both picked 16 wickets each in the season. Among the two, Rogers bowled fewer overs and even had a better economy. The medium-pacer for Melbourne Renegades averaged 19.12 for a dismissal while Meredith picked 16 at 20 apiece. However, the Hobart Hurricanes pacer saved his best for the final where he claimed figures of 3/27 and helped in winning the first title.
Jason Behrendorff has the 5th most wickets in the BBL. The tall fast-bowler has taken 140 wickets in the league. The left-arm pacer is especially lethal with the new ball. He has the ability to swing the new ball at a decent pace. The Perth Scorchers bowler has played 96 matches in the tournament. Behrendorff has not only been successful in picking wickets consistently but also contains the flow of runs. The 34-year-old has an economy of 6.95 which is the best among the top 10 wicket-takers in the league.
Behrendorff in the last few seasons has shown the benefit of having the experience of playing international cricket. In the last three seasons, he has picked 54 wickets striking at close to 14 balls per wicket. During this period he has only picked up one four-wicket haul for the five-time champions.
Kane Richardson has the 4th most wickets in the BBL. The fast bowler has picked up 141 wickets in the league. Richardson is a death-over specialist and uses his variations to good effect to control the flow of runs and pick wickets. He has the ability to bowl the yorker at will. Richardson varies the speed of his yorker to outfox the batters. After playing for the Adelaide Strikers for six seasons a move to Melbourne Renegades helped the fast bowler in gaining some form and regular playing time.
The move to Renegades paid dividends in the first two seasons as the South Australian picked 36 wickets in 24 matches. The right-arm pacer’s best season came in 2018/19 as he picked up 24 wickets. He picked up the most wickets in the season and played a crucial role in the Renegades winning their only BBL title.
Ben Dwarshuis has the 3rd most wickets in the BBL. The left-handed bowler has picked up 148 wickets in the tournament. Dwarshuis has played only for the Sydney Sixers in 10 seasons. While Dwarshuis has been successful in picking up wickets he tends to go for a few runs. The Sixers’ pacer has an economy of 8.01 runs per over. The pacer is known for his consistency at bowling length deliveries. However, if needed Dwarshuis can use the yorker to good effect as well.
The 30-year-old’s best season in the tournament came in BBL 2020/21. In 13 matches, Dwarshuis took 24 wickets at a strike rate of less than 12 balls per wicket. He finished the season as the joint second-highest wicket-taker. In spite of his bowling performances for the Sixers, Dwarshuis has failed to grab a place for his national side. The pace trio of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood has meant that Australia is unable to find places for new fast bowlers.
Andrew Tye has the 2nd most wickets in the BBL. The right-arm pacer has picked up 161 wickets in the tournament. Like Richardson, Tye is also a death-over specialist. He is one of the rare Australian fast bowlers to have the ability to bowl the knuckleball. Tye had one of the best IPL debuts as he picked up a hat-trick. In BBL in the same year, Tye picked two hat-tricks as well. Injuries have played a spoilsport in Tye’s career. In 2019, after picking up an elbow injury, the fast bowler missed a few games. However, when he made a return, Tye appeared to have gathered a few yards of extra pace. The increase in speed was made possible by a tweak in the bowling action.
Tye has an incredible achievement to his name. The fast bowler picked up 20 wickets in a season three times in a row. He achieved the feat from 2020 to 2023. During this period, Tye picked up 72 wickets striking at 14 balls per wicket.
Sean Abbott has the most wickets in the BBL. The bowling all-rounder has picked up 175 wickets. Abbott is an important player for the Sydney Sixers where he has played for 11 seasons. The 32-year-old’s utility in the team does not stop with his wicket-taking abilities but transcends into a more than useful lower-order batter. Abbott bowls in the death overs which has resulted in an expensive economy. Limited spots in the Australian playing 11 has meant that the 32-year-old in spite of his impressive record has played only 46 international matches.
Abbott’s most impressive season in the marquee league came in 2022/23. The right-arm medium pacer picked up 29 wickets in the season. He finished as the top wicket-taker during the season. The Sixers finished second on the points table in the season and were knocked out of the tournament in the Challenger.
Sean Abbott has picked up the most wickets for a single team in the BBL. The bowling all-rounder has taken 165 wickets while playing for Sydney Sixers. Andrew Tye ranks second with 159 wickets for Perth Scorchers. Tye’s poor 2024/25 season meant that he has fallen six wickets behind Abbott’s 165 wickets for the Sixers. Bowling all-rounder, Daniel Sams has taken 109 wickets for Sydney Thunder in 84 matches and ranks third on this list.
