Harshal Patel was named the player of the match for his crucial four-wicket haul in the first innings. The right-arm pacer used the conditions at the Chidambaram Stadium perfectly. He bowled many slower balls with different variations. Among Harshal’s scalps were Sam Curran, Dewald Brevis, MS Dhoni, and Noor Ahmad.
Harshal Patel was the star performer with the ball in hand for the visitors. The right-arm pacer picked up four wickets and used the slowness of the surface at the MA Chidambaram Stadium to perfection. He continuously outfoxed the hosts and made it seem like he was a part of the home side and not the visiting team. He dismissed Sam Curran in the power play before getting the better of Dewald Brevis, MS Dhoni, and Noor Ahmad.
Kamindu Mendis showcased an all-round performance in all three facets of the game. He bowled very well in his first two overs, giving away only six runs and picking up a wicket. He gave 20 runs in his third over but stood out in the first innings for his splendid catch. The catch dismissed Dewald Brevis, who was by far the best batter from the Chennai Super Kings. He dove to his left side and caught the ball while it was in the air.
In the second innings, Kamindu came to the crease in a tricky situation. Batting at number six, SRH needed 65 runs in 48 balls, and the Sri Lankan batter remained unbeaten and scored 32 runs in only 22 balls.
Ishan Kishan finally got back into some form. The left-handed batter top-scored for the visitors, making 44 runs in only 34 balls. His knock was not only important given where the match was, but also for himself personally. Between his century and tonight, the left-handed batter had struggled in the middle and could score only 30-odd runs in seven innings. Kishan smashed five fours and a solitary six in his 34-ball knock.
It was another disappointing batting performance from the Chennai Super Kings in the first innings. The visitors started the first innings on the best note possible. Mohammed Shami, after missing the first game, struck on the first ball of the match and dismissed Shaik Rasheed. The power play was dominated by Sunrisers Hyderabad as they picked up two more wickets.
Ayush Mhatre was the shining light for the hosts in the power play. The 17-year-old played with an aggressive mindset and scored 30 runs off 19 deliveries. After his dismissal, the rate of scoring went down drastically before Dewald Brevis took off. The South African batter scored 42 runs in only 25 balls. He was going run-a-ball in the first 17 balls he faced. However, once he took charge, it looked like the hosts would comfortably get to a score of 180. Kamindu Mendis, diving to his left, took a stunning catch to end the knock from Brevis. Apart from these two batters, no other CSK batter played a knock of any substance.
For the Sunrisers, Harshal Patel, who had a disappointing time in the field, was the pick among the bowlers. The right-arm pacer picked up four wickets, dismissing Sam Curran, Dewald Brevis, MS Dhoni, and Noor Ahmad. SRH skipper, Pat Cummins and Jaydev Unadkat too picked up a couple of wickets each as the hosts were bowled out for 154 runs.
The Chennai Super Kings, defending a small total, got off to a great start in the second innings. Khaleel Ahmed dismissed Abhishek Sharma in the first over itself. Anshul Kamboj got among the wickets as well, dismissing Travis Head in the final over of the power play. They kept building on the pressure thanks to some great bowling from Ravindra Jadeja.
However, the small score in the first innings played a huge part, which meant that the visitors did not have to take many risks. Ishan Kishan, after seven horrible innings, finally returned to some form and scored 44 runs in only 34 balls. But it was Kamindu Mendis who, after shining in the first innings with his bowling and fielding, continued making an impact with the bat in hand as well. The Sri Lankan batter remained unbeaten and played a knock of 32 runs in only 22 balls. Nitish Kumar Reddy, too, after some poor performance, made a handy contribution with his unbeaten 19-run knock, sealing the win for his side.
