The Indian bowlers feature seven times on the list for best bowling figures in IPL 2024. Sandeep Sharma holds the record for the best bowling figures in IPL 2024. The pacer had an incredible season and was one of the reasons that Rajasthan Royals made it to the playoffs. Sandeep picked up five wickets while giving away 18 runs against Mumbai Indians. Unsurprisingly, India’s best bowler, Jasprit Bumrah ranks second on the list. Bumrah took a fifer against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Wankhede Stadium. Bumrah picked up five wickets while giving away 21 runs. Another pacer, Yash Thakur makes it into the list by picking up a five-wicket haul while giving away 30 runs. The LSG pacer did it against Gujarat Titans at the Ekana Stadium.
West Indian fast bowler Alzarri Joseph holds the record for the best bowling figures in IPL. The tall pacer picked up six wickets while giving away just 12 runs. Interestingly, Joseph does not only have the best bowling figures in IPL but he did it on his debut match. Mumbai Indians were defending a paltry total of 136 runs against SRH when Joseph achieved the magnificent feat. His figures of 6/12 ensured that MI defended the low score and won the match by 30 runs. Among his six wickets was the prized scalp of David Warner. He also came close to picking up a hat-trick after dismissing Deepak Hooda and Rashid Khan off successive deliveries.
When IPL was just taking its first steps players from Pakistan were part of the cash-rich league. While Pakistani cricketers did not play after the first season some of their names were etched in history books. Sohail Tanvir had his name etched in IPL’s history books for having the best bowling figures in IPL. The Pakistani fast bowler held the record for 11 years before it was broken in 2019. Tanvir picked up six wickets while giving away just 14 runs against Chennai Super Kings. He picked up the wicket of the current CSK head coach, Stephen Fleming as well as Albie Morkel who was the top scorer in the match. At that time, Tanvir’s bowling figures of 6/14 was the record for best figures in any T20 match.
Adam Zampa holds the record for the best bowling figures in IPL by a spinner. The Australian spinner in spite of playing a very few matches in the league has his name in the record books. Zampa picked up six wickets while giving away 19 runs against SRH in 2016 for Rising Pune Supergiants. His six wickets included scalps of Yuvraj Singh and Kane Williamson. Zampa went wicket-less in his first over of the match and still bounced back to create history. Unfortunately for Zampa, his team ended up losing that match by four runs.
Former Indian spinner, Anil Kumble jointly holds the record for best bowling figures in IPL by an Indian bowler. Kumble picked up five wickets while giving away just five runs against Rajasthan Royals in 2009. Kumble’s five-wicket haul included the scalps of Yusuf Pathan, Ravindra Jadeja and Shane Warne. It looks like only if an Indian bowler picks up six wickets they would be able to overtake Kumble.
Akash Madhwal holds the record for best bowling figures in IPL by an uncapped bowler. Playing in his first season of the IPL the fast bowler from Uttarakhand picked up five wickets while giving away five runs against Lucknow Supergiants in 2023. Madhwal achieved the feat in the playoffs which makes it the best bowling figures in IPL playoffs. Madhwal’s five wickets included the scalp of big-hitter Nicholas Pooran. His record of best bowling figures as an uncapped and best bowling figures in playoffs looks safe and could be held by him for a long time.
Anil Kumble and Akash Madhwal jointly hold the record for the best bowling figures in IPL by Indian bowlers. Kumble achieved the feat in 2009 against RR in Cape Town while Madhwal picked up his fifer against LSG in the Chidambaram Stadium in 2023. Jasprit Bumrah with a five-wicket haul costing 10 runs is ranked third on this list. Bumrah achieved the feat against three-time champions, KKR in 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium. Mohit Sharma also picked up a five-wicket haul costing 10 runs. Astonishingly, Sharma’s five wickets came in just 14 balls. Just two days after Madhwal’s 5/5, Sharma stunned Mumbai Indians with 5/10 to knock them out of IPL 2023.
