This victory will be especially remembered for the batting displayed by Indian captain Shubman Gill. The kind of historic innings he played in this match will give him more confidence as a leader. Apart from this, the Indian bowlers also played an important role in putting this match in India's favour by performing brilliantly. Especially Akash Deep's bowling will be the focus of this match. The way India made a comeback in this match after losing the first match would have definitely increased England's problems.
The kind of captaincy Gill displayed in this match would have put an end to the worries of the fans regarding his captaincy future. In this match, India defeated England in all three departments: bowling, batting and fielding. Mohammed Siraj’s bowling in the first innings and taking 6 wickets of England, his role in this victory is no less than anyone else. Ravindra Jadeja has also proved himself by batting well and has proved why he is currently called the best test all-rounder in World Cricket. Overall, this match will be remembered for the comeback of Team India in which all the players gave a one-sided victory to Team India by giving their brilliant performance. This victory will also increase the morale of the Indian team, which will definitely benefit them in the coming matches. Shubman Gill was awarded the Man of the Match award for his double century in the first innings and 161 runs in the second innings.
This win will definitely boost the confidence of Team India and will keep a mental edge over England in the upcoming matches. From here, Team India will play its next match at Lord's Ground in London from July 10 to July 14.
And finally, Akash Deep took the last wicket of Brydon Carse, with which he has taken 10 wickets in this match, while 6 in this innings. Thanks to Akash's excellent bowling, Team India has created a history here that will be remembered for many years to come. It was a back-of-a-length delivery outside off-stump which Carse tried to slog, slicing it in the air. Finally, Indian captain Shubhman Gill took the catch and ended Bredon Carse's innings of 38 runs in 48 balls.
Josh Tongue was trying to play cautiously for some time, but Mohammad Siraj's brilliant catch at mid-wicket ended his innings. This ball was tossed up by Ravindra Jadeja towards the leg stump, and the batsman went forward to flick it. Even Tongue could not believe the kind of brilliant catch Siraj took on this ball.
Akash Deep bowled brilliantly and destroyed England's last hope of avoiding defeat. Jimmy Smith made his intentions clear by hitting sixes on the last two balls, but this time, a slower ball into the pitch ended Smith's courageous innings. Jamie tried his best to save England from defeat by playing an 88-run innings in 99 games, but ultimately he failed to save his wicket. From here, it remains to be seen how long it will take for India to win.
After playing a brilliant innings of 184 runs in the first innings, Jamie Smith is also taking England's innings forward wisely. He is not giving the Indian bowlers a chance to get him out with a good shot selection. At this moment, only Jamie Smith seems to be standing between England's defeat and India's victory. Certainly, the England team and their fans have a lot of expectations from him.
The situation is going from bad to worse for England. England has lost six wickets for 153 runs. The type of bowling shown by the Indian team is really praiseworthy. Even in difficult situations, Team India is playing like champions. From here, only a miracle can save England from defeat. Only if England tries too hard will it be able to draw this match; otherwise, from here, the path to victory for India looks very easy. From here, Team India needs only four wickets to win, while there is still a big lead of 454 runs over England.
Just before lunch, Washington Sundar gave a big success to Team India in the form of the wicket of England captain Stokes. It's lovely drift from Sundar, the ball just dips in front of the Stumps and manages to hit the pad first before the bat. Although Stokes wanted to just block this ball, but got fooled due to a late drift. England skipper Stokes also failed to take the team out of the difficult situation and returned to the pavilion after scoring 33 runs.
As soon as the rain stopped on the fifth day of the second test match, Akash Deep thundered like lightning on the England batsmen. Akash Deep bowled out Ollie Pope on the first ball of the fourth over of the day. This was a back-length delivery with extra bounce by Akash Deep, which hit the back elbow of Ollie Pope and then rolled to the stumps. Akash Deep has dismissed Pope for the third time in his 20 balls. Pope is returning to the pavilion after scoring just 20 runs. England had a lot of expectations of him.
In his next over, Akash Deep got Brook out LBW as well, although Brook took a review, but that could not save him, and Brook also got out after scoring just 23 runs. Now the England team seems to be in a serious situation.
By the end of the fourth day, England were 72 runs for with the loss of 3 wickets and they still needed to score 536 runs to win. For England, Ollie Pope and Harry Brook are at the crease with 24 and 15 runs, respectively. The kind of batting done by Gill today is commendable, whereas the wickets taken by Team India's bowlers in the end have ensured the victory of Team India as well. However, Team India still needs 7 wickets on the fifth day of the match to win, which will not be an easy task at all.
Akash Deep again used his aggressive bowling and got Joe Root out in the 11th over. This wicket will definitely be a big blow to England's hopes. Huge wicket for India in their pursuit of a series-levelling hope. This was a full-length delivery from Akash Deep, which Joe Root wanted to hit on the side, but the ball took the outside edge and went on to hit the stumps. Joe Root could score just six runs before getting out.
England's team, which came out to chase a big total, did not have a good start, and Crawley was dismissed by Mohammad Siraj in the second over without even scoring a single run. Similarly, Ben Dukes also fell prey to Akash Deep in his attempt to bat fast. He scored 25 runs in 15 balls before getting bowled out in the 5th over. When England needed to save wickets, Duckett made the mistake of scoring runs quickly.
After 83 overs, the umpire called for the drinks break, but the Indian Skipper called his batters back. Team India has decided to declare the innings after getting a huge lead of 607 runs. On the one hand, after Nitish Kumar Reddy was dismissed, Washington Sundar was seen scoring runs quickly, while Ravindra Jadeja was also playing a good game, scoring 69 runs. At this point in the match, Team India appears to be far ahead of England. Before the day ends, Team India would definitely want to take some wickets of England. While on one hand, England needs 608 runs to win this match, on the other hand, Team India would like to take 10 wickets and level the series 1-1.
After captain Gill and Ravindra Jadeja made a partnership of 150 runs, Gill lost his wicket in the very next over. He fell victim to Bashir in the 81st over. It was a short delivery from Bashir, which Gill tried to play on the leg side, but the edge of the bat touched up, and he gave a catch to Bashir, who took it easily. For the kind of game Gill has shown in this match, the fans sitting in the pavilion gave him a standing ovation. However, Gill became the first player to score a double hundred and 150 runs in the same match before getting out.
By the tea break, Team India has taken a huge lead of 484 runs. Currently Gill is at the crease scoring 100 runs whereas Ravindra Jadeja is playing after scoring 25 runs. Team India has reached the 300 mark with the loss of four wickets. Captain Gill would definitely like to increase this lead a little more and declare India's innings. It will be interesting to see which score the Indian management considers safe before declaring the innings.
Gill completed his century in this innings by taking a single run off Bashir's delivery in the 67th over. With this, he joins a club of players who have made a double hundred and i hundred in the same test match. He became the ninth batter to score a double hundred and a hundred in the same team. The way gill batting and playing with too much control, too good for team team.
Shoaib Bashir ended another aggressive knock from Rishabh Pant in the 47th over.
Pant, in an attempt to make a run aggressively, gives a simple catch at long-off to Ben Duckett. Obviously, he wanted to completely dominate England by making runs quickly. However, before getting out, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill had made a partnership of 110 runs by adding runs rapidly. However, Team India still has a strong hold on this match.
Since the lunch break, Indian Test captain Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant have been seen batting fast. Gill has completed fifty in 57 balls by scoring a boundary on the ball of the tongue in the 42nd over; similarly, Rishabh Pant has also completed fifty in 46 balls with a single in the 44th over. The fans sitting in the pavilion are enjoying the batting of both batsmen because they are scoring most of the runs through boundaries. Certainly, the Indian team is considering scoring runs quickly and declaring the innings early.
By the lunch break on the fourth day, captain Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are playing with a partnership of 51 runs. However, England's bowlers got two wickets in this session. But the kind of start Rishabh Pant has made as soon as he came has enhanced the prestige of Team India. Team India has a huge lead of 357 runs till the lunch break. The Indian captain is present at the crease after scoring 24 runs, and Rishabh Pant has scored 41 runs.
After KL Rahul was out, Rishabh Pant came to bat and opened his account with a four and a six. As soon as he came, he made his intentions clear by hitting boundaries on the fourth and fifth balls in Tongue's over. However, he was also lucky when his catch was missed on the last ball of the next over off Stokes's ball. Despite the dropped catch, there has been no reduction in aggression in Pant's batting.
KL Rahul also failed to convert his good innings into a big one. Rahul tried to play a drive but, his front foot could not come forward completely and he lost his wicket on the extra pace ball of the tongue. He scored 55 runs before getting out.
KL Rahul and Karun Nair looked good at the start of the fourth day's match. However, neither of them could make a long-term partnership. Karun Nair got out cheaply again after scoring 26 runs on the sixth ball of the 21st over. Brydon Carse has once again given England a breakthrough. It was a seam-up full delivery outside off stump which Karun Nair tried to drive and ended up giving an outside edge to Jamie Smith. With this wicket, Karan Nair's flop streak continues. So far he has not been able to play any good innings on the England tour.
It is great news for the hosts who will look at the weather today and feel that they are in the game. Despite having conceded a lead of close to 250 runs, the England bowlers would know that an Indian batting collapse could help them restrict them to a reasonable score. It could be a stop-and-start kind of a day, which means that the frontline bowlers would remain fresher for longer durations while the batters would need to settle themselves again and again. Someone like KL Rahul would be the key batter for India, given his experience of batting in seaming and swinging conditions.
By the end of the third day's play, Team India had scored 64 runs at the loss of one wicket, after which Team India currently has a total lead of 244 runs. The fourth day's play will give a glimpse of the possible results of this Test match. While on the one hand, Team India's batters will want to bring the inning in India's favour by making it stronger, on the other hand, England's bowlers will try their best to stop Team India from scoring a big total by taking early wickets. The Indian cricket fans will once again hope for a good innings from Captain Shubman Gill.
Despite the Indian bowlers performing well in the match, Team India's openers also scored runs at a rapid pace. The kind of arrogance shown by the opening bowlers on the sixth and seventh over of the inning clearly shows that both the batters had come here with the intention of playing aggressively. However, due to this haste, Jaiswal got out LBW on the ball of Josh Tongue in the eighth over of the inning. Before getting out, Jaiswal scored 28 runs in 22 balls with the help of 6 fours.
The way Indian bowlers have made a strong comeback after taking the new ball is commendable. While Brook and Jamie Smith put together a huge partnership of 303 runs, England lost their last five wickets for just 20 runs. England's batting completely flopped after Harry Brook's wicket fell. While on one side Jamie Smith was not out after scoring 184 runs, on the other end no batsman could support him responsibly. If we look at Indian bowling, then Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep together dismissed the entire English team. While Mohammed Siraj got 6 wickets, Akashdeep also took four wickets.
Due to the excellent bowling of Mohammed Siraj, the last three batsmen of England could not even score a single run, whereas, in the entire innings, a total of 6 batsmen could not even open their accounts. While there was a huge partnership of 303 runs between Harry Brooke and James Smith, the remaining England batsmen together managed to add only 104 runs. Despite England's inning of 407 runs, Team India still has a lead of 180 runs. After having a good lead, Team India will definitely try its best to take advantage of it and put pressure on England.
Finally, after a lot of effort, Indian bowlers were successful in breaking the partnership of Harry Brook and Jamie Smith. A good delivery from Akash deep outside off gets the inside edge and the ball hits the off-stump. However, before getting out, Brook had scored 158 runs in 234 balls. With this wicket, the 303-run partnership between Harry Brook and Jamie Smith also ended. The Indian bowlers achieved this feat just two overs after taking the second new ball.
The kind of performance Harry Brook and Jamie Smith are showing will surely be remembered for a long time. On the fourth ball of the 82nd over, Jamie Smith took two runs and completed a 300-run partnership between him and Harry Brook. This strong partnership will definitely bring happiness to the England camp.
England's batsmen have displayed a brilliant game and have not given any chance to the Indian bowlers to succeed. In the 28 overs played in the second session, England have scored 116 runs without losing any wickets. Indian bowlers tried their best to take wickets in the second session but could not trouble Harry Brook and Jamie Smith much. However, there are still five overs left to get the second new ball, after which Indian fans are hopeful that the Indian bowlers will be successful in taking wickets.
Despite the aggressive bowling of the Indian bowlers, the England batsmen deserve praise as they did not lose a single. While Jamie Smith has already scored 150 runs, Harry Brook is also very close to completing it. By not losing a single wicket in the second session, England's team has fully compensated for the losses caused by the initial setbacks. The kind of game Harry Brook and James Smith have shown this season, England's team is definitely looking to make a good comeback in this match.
With England's batsmen performing brilliantly, Harry Brooke and Jamie Smith's 250-run partnership has also been completed, and they have made a big score of 334 runs in just 70 overs. Harry Brooke is currently playing on 123 runs, while Smith is on 153. Indian bowlers have been bowling for more than 50 overs, but they have not had any success in taking wickets yet.
Even after lunch, England's batters Harry Brook and Jamie Smith are seen playing well. They don't give any chance to the Indian bowlers to take wickets. Harry Brook completed his wonderful century by hitting a four on the sixth ball of Krishna in the 51st over of the inning. This is Brook's ninth test century of his career, which he scored in just his 27th Test match. Indian bowlers are trying their best to take a wicket, but they are only facing failure.
Mohammed Siraj has redeemed himself with an absolute rollicking start to the day for the visitors. The right-arm pacer was tasked with leading the bowling attack in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, and he did so with some great resolve. However, it was a session of two halves as Jamie Smith and Harry Brook took their chances to push the Indian bowlers to the back foot.
It took Mohammed Siraj to give India a dream start to Day 3 at Edgbaston. The right-arm pacer dismissed Joe Root a seemingly harmless delivery down the leg side. The number one ranked batter flicked at it and tickled it behind to the wicketkeeper, Rishabh Pant. If the wicket-taking ball to Root was harmless, Ben Stokes received a jaffa first up which he gloved behind to the wicketkeeper. It was pitched in the fourth stump line but rose like anything and took the English skipper by surprise.
Harry Brook and Jamie Smith fought out the probing spells from Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep, before Prasidh Krishna released the pressure. The two young English batters seemed to be in a boxing bout and threw a combination of punches which all landed on Prasidh.
In a five-over spell, the Indian pacer was taken to the cleaners by the two batters, particularly by the wicketkeeper. He conceded 50 runs in those overs and bowled a momentum-crushing spell.
In the process, Brook and Smith reached their half-centuries with the latter completing the milestone in only 43 balls. The wicketkeeper
The run-rate during the session thanks to the two right-handers remained close to seven runs per over. Thankfully, for Indian fans, the visitors still trail by 338 runs. However, if these two continue to bat at this rate the next two sessions could feel very long for a two-test-old skipper, Shubman Gill.
It is another cloudy day at Edgbaston. However, once again, these clouds might not interrupt the action, with chances of rain being pretty low. There will be a bit of sunlight for the first one and a half sessions of play. But the second half of the game could have more clouds, which could assist the Indian pacers. If the weather remains as predicted, then the Indian pacers could get the second new ball right in time when there is a higher amount of cloud coverage.
For England, the brewing partnership between Harry Brook and Joe Root remains highly crucial. If the two batters manage to see off the opening spells, they could make hay of the batter-friendly conditions at Edgbaston. Both Root and Brook are ranked number one and two, respectively, on the ICC Men’s Rankings. The hosts would want these two to stay on the pitch for as long as possible.
By the end of the second day, Team India appears to be in a strong position. India still has a lead of 510 runs while England has scored 77 runs at the loss of three wickets. The third day of this match will be very decisive. While on one hand, the England batters will want to strengthen their position by scoring good runs on the board, on the other hand, the Indian bowlers will try their best to take early wickets by bowling aggressively.
By the end of the second day's match, Joe Root was batting on 18 while Harry Brook was batting on 30.
Team India's bowlers displayed aggressive bowling when England's inning started. In the third over of the inning, Akash Deep took two important wickets on consecutive balls while bowling a maiden over. Akash Deep provides the early breakthrough on the 4th ball of the third over. He bowls a length delivery outside off. Duckett punches, and the thick outside edge flies nicely to Gill, who takes the catch easily. On the very next ball, Akash Deep dismissed Pope in his very first ball and sent him to the pavilion.
Gill lost his wicket on the scoreboard of 574 runs. After that, Team India could add only 13 more runs, and they were all out on 587 runs. England's bowlers bowled well in the end and took the last four wickets for just 29 runs. While Gill scored a double century in the first innings, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravindra Jadeja also managed to score half-centuries. If we talk about England's bowling, then we should talk about Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue, who took two wickets each, while Soheb Bashir was successful in taking three wickets.
After the tea break, in the third over itself, the English bowlers achieved a big success by taking the wicket of Shubman Gill. He lost his wicket by hitting a tired shot on the third ball of Josh Tongue in the 144th over. It was a short delivery from the tongue. Gill went for the pull but ended up dragging it off the inside half straight to Pope at square leg. Gill does not look happy at all after getting out like this. Shubman Gill's wonderful innings will remain in memory for a long time. He was dismissed by Josh Tongue after scoring 269 runs.
Team India has played the second session very well. In the second season, the Indian team has lost only one wicket, while there is disappointment in the England bowling attack. While Akash Deep has come to bat after the dismissal of Washington Sundar, Gill is currently playing after scoring 266 runs. The way Gill is batting, he will definitely break some records. He has not given the English bowlers any chance to get him out. Gill would like to convert his innings into a triple century in the next session.
In the 139th over, Joe Root ended a well-managed inning of Sundar. The root bowls a good length delivery, which Sundar had expected that the ball would touch the bat, but the ball took a slight turn and landed straight on the middle stump. Washington Sundar's inning ended with 42 runs in 103 balls. With this wicket, the 144-run partnership between Gill and Sundar has ended.
The fact that English captain Ben Stokes called Harry Brook to bowl demonstrates the England team's helpless condition. India has lost only one wicket in the entire day played so far, while the condition of the English bowlers seems pathetic. Indian Captain Gill scored good runs by hitting three consecutive fours in the over of Brook.
Washington Sundar is supporting captain Gill very well. Taking advantage of this, Shubham Gill continues to score runs from the other end. In the 120th over of the match, Washington Sundar put more pressure on the English bowlers by hitting a four and a six on the third and fourth balls of Josh Tongue. After getting good batting support from Sundar, Gill scored his first double hundred by taking a single on the first ball of the 122nd over. With this double century, Gill has become the second youngest Indian captain to score a double hundred in Tests.
It was a near-perfect first session for the Indian team on the second day as Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja played out the opening spell from Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, and Brydon Carse. Jadeja completed his half-century in the 89th over and celebrated in traditional fashion using his bat as a sword. However, just as when it looked like the left-hander would get to triple figures, he was dismissed late in the session.
For the second time in as many tests, Shubman Gill has shown how he has taken to the number four spot like a fish to water. The Indian skipper, having reached the triple-digit figure mark yesterday, built on his start. The right-handed batter went past 150 as English bowlers toiled hard in the session. The hosts looked for answers as to how to stop the two Indian batters. Gill in particular looked in total touch, scoring on both sides of the wicket. He even brought out the reverse sweep to score behind the keeper against Shoaib Bashir. Gill, like yesterday, showed an immense amount of trust in his defence and rotated the strike well. As Bashir switched to a round the wicket angle, Gill deposited him to the stands to bring the 200-run stand for the sixth wicket.
Gill received a great deal of support from Jadeja. For the first time on this tour, the veteran all-rounder found himself batting with a proper batter and showcased his class. The left-hander batted with a great deal of control. He was set to bring up his second century at Edgbaston, having scored a century at the same venue the last time India toured England in 2021. However, Josh Tongue dismissed him with a short ball that jumped off a seemingly lifeless surface.
The weather prediction for the day was heavy cloud coverage. However, the English weather continued to remain unpredictable, as it was a sunny first session. The batting was made to look much easier than it should have been as England’s inexperience with the ball in hand became evident. For the hosts, the over rate remained pretty poor as they managed to bowl only 25 overs in the opening session of Day 2 at Edgbaston. Since the inception of the World Test Championship, England have often been guilty of bowling with a slow over rate and have faced penalties too for it.
In spite of a full day’s play along with an extra half an hour, England could only bowl 85 overs on the first day. The weather on the second day of the test is once again expected to be pretty friendly for cricket fans. There is a high amount of cloud coverage throughout the day; however, the chance of rain is pretty minimal.
The hosts have a five-over new ball, and cloudy conditions could assist the English bowlers. Chris Woakes will be the key bowler in this weather. Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja, after showing restraint with the bat yesterday, would need to start fresh once again and battle it out in tough conditions.
Shubman Gill's sensible innings have saved Team India from getting into a difficult situation. Apart from Gill, Ravindra Jadeja's experience was also seen in the third session today. The way Jadeja has supported Gill is commendable. By the end of the first day's play, both batsmen made a strong partnership of 99 runs and put Team India in a good position. At the end of the first day's play, Gill was batting on 114* while Ravindra Jadeja was batting on 41*. In the current situation, Team India will likely aim to score a big total and avoid repeating the mistakes made during the first test match.
Today, the bowling line-up from England did not show the sharpness for which England's bowling attack is known. Where Chris Woakes got two wickets, Ben Stokes got one wicket, whereas Brydon Carse and Shoaib Bashir got one success each. On the second day of the match, where Team India would want to get a big total on the scoreboard, on the other hand, England's tyrannical actions would wish to stop Team India from reaching a big goal.
The Indian team was looking in a strong position after lunch, but after the tea break, England strengthened their position a bit by taking two wickets in consecutive overs. Rishabh Pant, who was playing with patience, lost his wicket on the ball of Shoaib Bashir in the 61st over of the match. The delivery tossed up and landed quite full. But Pant fails to get under it properly. The ball went flat and hard to Crawley at long-on, and he caught it safely with his right hand. Pant lost his wicket after scoring 25 runs in 42 deliveries.
The troubles did not end here for Team India as Nitish Kumar Reddy was bowled out in the very next over on a ball from Chris Woakes. Nitish Kumar Reddy failed to perform as per the expectations of fans, and he lost his wicket after scoring just one run. With two consecutive wickets, England once again looked in a strong position.
Even after losing two consecutive wickets, Gill maintained his composure in batting along with Ravindra Jadeja, managing the situation very well. Gill looked in complete control, and Jadeja gave him company. Gill completed his seventh century by hitting two consecutive fours in Root's over in the 80th over of the match. This was Gill's second century in two consecutive matches in this series. He also became the third Indian captain with hundreds of consecutive tests against England.
India lost an important wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal and made 84 runs in 28 overs. England bowlers have surprised batsmen a couple of times by bowling on a well-disciplined line and length. But Pant has made his intentions clear by hitting a six on Basir's ball in the 51st over, that he is not in the mood to take any pressure. It seems difficult for England's bowlers to take wickets in these good batting conditions.
On the first ball of the 45th over, Ben Stokes dismissed Jaiswal for 87 runs. It was a short and wide outside off ball, Jaiswal cuts and has bottom edged it behind. Overall, it was not a wicket-taking delivery, but Stokes still took a wicket on it. Jaiswal stands there in shock. Jaiswal will surely regret losing his wicket to a below-average ball. He fails to get his well-deserved hundred. It was skipper Stokes who did it again for England.
After Jaiswal's dismissal, Rishabh Pant has come to bat at number 5. He looked confident on this pitch and opened his run account on the 5th ball. Although Stokes still seems to be in attack with two slips, Pant and Gill together are facing the bowlers well. On this good batting pitch, both batsmen are playing well without facing any trouble.
For Team India, Yashasvi Jaiswal played well in the first session, and Gill supported him well and gave a good start in the second session as well. However, in search of a wicket, England lost a review for Shubman Gill on the ball of Brydon Carse in the 34th over. On the fourth inswinger ball of the over, Gill gets forward and pushes at it. Carse looked confident and appealing for LBW. He took Captain Stock into confidence, and England went to review it. But the thick inside edge saved Gill, and England lost the review. Although it was a good ball and if the ball had not touched the bat, then there was a high possibility of Gill getting LBW out.
Yashasvi Jaiswal survived an early LBW from Chris Woakes. The senior pacer for the hosts had the ball doing all sorts of tricks. On a sunny morning in Birmingham, batting remained a tough job for the visitors as the English bowling duo of Woakes and Carse got the ball to move. Unlike the first test, KL Rahul could not see off the new ball and was dismissed by Woakes. The right-arm pacer induced a false shot from the Indian opener as he played one to the stumps. Sanjay Manjrekar’s comments about calling KL Rahul a one-test wonder came true as the Indian opener was dismissed after scoring only two runs.
Karun Nair was back at his preferred position at number three with Sai Sudharsan dropping out of this test. Nair’s return to the top of the order came hand in hand with some luck for him. In his first 15 balls, the right-handed batter received three half-volleys and dispatched them to the boundary fence. The right-handed batter was matching Jaiswal shot for shot and played at a higher strike rate. The veteran batter was playing at a strike rate of close to 80 during his first 30 balls.
Both batters applied a lot of pressure on the hosts, with Josh Tongue and Ben Stokes leaking runs. It meant that all the hard work from Woakes and Carse was undone. Both Tongue and Stokes leaked runs at a rate of more than five runs per over.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was at the center of attention for all the wrong reasons. The left-handed batter was criticized for his fielding in the slip cordon. However, the young batter continued with his fine form from the previous match. The 23-year-old brought up his half-century in the 22nd over by smashing Tongue for a couple of fours in a row. He was India’s finest batter in the session, and the visitors would want him to continue to bat for longer durations and make the most of the start that he has gotten.
Tongue’s economy went beyond seven runs per over after being hit for three fours in his sixth over. It meant that Carse had to come back into and replace Tongue. He was an instant success as the right-arm pacer struck with his third ball of the spell and sent Karun Nair back into the dressing room.
England won the toss and elected to bowl first at the Edgbaston Stadium in the second test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
England announced the playing XI without any changes from the one that took the field at Headingley. On the other hand, the visitors packed their bags and added Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar. Jasprit Bumrah was replaced by Akash Deep as the Indian team announced three changes in their side.
Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (C), Jamie Smith (wk), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir
Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Karun Nair, Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (wk), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Akaash Deep, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna
Once, as is the case with almost all venues in England, the pitch favours the pacers more than the spinners. However, if there is one venue where the teams can go ahead and opt to play with an extra spinner, it is Edgbaston. Since 2000, while the fast bowlers have picked up almost three times the wickets, the spinners have been on par in terms of average.
England has already announced that they will be taking the field with Shoaib Bashir as their premier spinner. India, on the other hand, could add either Kuldeep Yadav or Washington Sundar to bolster their spin attack.
The weather for the opening day of the match indicates that there could be a full day’s play, with chances of rain being pretty low. If there is continued sunlight cover at Edgbaston, then the spinners could come in play earlier than usual as the match progresses.
After adding Jofra Archer to the squad for the second test, many expected the spearhead to walk into the playing XI straightaway. However, to everyone’s surprise, the hosts have named the same playing XI for the second test as well. Continuing their tradition of naming the playing XI in advance, England named the team that will take the field at Edgbaston on 30th June, two days before the test.
Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (C), Jamie Smith (wk), Chris Woakes, Josh Tongue, Brydon Carse, Shoaib Bashir
England announced a change in the squad for the second test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The hosts have made an addition to their squad with Jofra Archer joining the Ben Stokes-led unit. If he goes on to play the clash, then it will be the first test for the right-arm pacer after four years. Archer, while making his return, played a County Championship game for Sussex where he bowled 18 overs and picked up a solitary wicket while remaining economical.
On the other hand, India would be making at least a couple of changes to their playing XI. Given that it is almost certain that Jasprit Bumrah will be missing the second test, the bowling attack will be shuffled. The Indian pacer was unarguably the best bowler among the two teams on a placid flat track in Leeds. Arshdeep Sing is expected to make his debut in the longest format and replace Bumrah. Shardul Thakur, after being pretty toothless in both facets of the game, could be replaced by either Kuldeep Yadav or Akash Deep.

England successfully completed the 10th-highest chase in the history of test cricket after they chased 371 in the fourth innings. Ben Duckett starred with the bat in hand with a century in the fourth innings. Earlier in the game, India had multiple opportunities to grab a stronghold of the clash after impressive performances with the bat in hand in both of their innings.
However, lower-order collapses meant that the hard work of the batters went in vain. Rishabh Pant with twin centuries at Headingley created history by becoming only the second wicketkeeper to achieve the feat in the longest format. He also became the first Indian batter to score two centuries in a single test in England.
The left-handed batter was in the news for the wrong reasons as well. Pant was sanctioned by the ICC and received a demerit point for showing dissent towards the umpire.
